SAF AMPF Reunion

SAF AMPF Reunion SAF SW Section and AMPF Chihuahua Section meet every two years to network. Reunions sometimes alternate between the U.S. (AZ or NM) and Mexico (Chihuahua).

La Sección Suroeste de la Sociedad de Forestales Estadounidenses y la Sección Chihuahuense de AMPF se reúnen cada dos años para estableccer contactos. Two professional forestry organizations - the Society of American Foresters (SAF) Southwest Section and Association of Mexican Professional Foresters (AMPF) Chihuahuan Section - meet every two years to share knowledge, skills and friendships. Wednes

days are travel days with an evening icebreaker. Thursdays are professional presentations and panel discussions; spouses can either attend these or participate in sightseeing options. Everyone joins the all-day educational field trip to a forestry project on Fridays and participates in fun cultural activities on Saturdays. A banquet is held that night with everyone recognizing the importance of this unique partnership and friendship. Sundays are used to travel home or continue exploring the area around the meeting site.

We arrived in Guachochi and drove the the Technical University of the Tarahumara, a really nice college campus. We watched a performance by Tarahumara dancers, then listened to presentations about forestry. Two students addresses our group, one stressing the importance of water. Certificates and AMPF-SAF shirts and hats were presented to several VIPs.

After visiting the Casa de la Cultura and the San Jose Church, I used the rest of the time left (while waiting for first tour to return) to walk the nearby streets. The first stop was the ice cream shop where I enjoyed three scoops!

Then I just walked the nearby streets to admire the architecture and ended up at the plaza across from the church where I watched the fountain with dancing water.

Across the street from the plaza where we waited for our tour bus, we discovered a hidden treasure,Antigua Presidencia Municipal. The entrance includes a beautiful courtyard filled with flowers, dozens of turtles and a large desert tortoise. Beyond the courtyard, the old entrance to the Teatro de Cámara has walls adorned with grand murals depicting Chihuahua's scenery, history, and culture.

Al otro lado de la calle desde la plaza donde esperábamos desde nuestro autobús turístico, descubrimos un tesoro escondido, Antigua Presidencia Municipal. La entrada incluye un hermoso patio lleno de flores, docenas de tortugas y una gran tortuga del desierto. Más allá del patio, la vieja entrada al Teatro de Cámara tiene paredes adornadas con grandes murales que representan el paisaje, la historia y la cultura de Chihuahua.
