The International Day of Dance was established in 1982 by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), which is the main partner for the performing arts of UNESCO. The date chosen, April 29, is the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), a French dancer and ballet master who is widely considered the creator of modern ballet.

Happy 495th Birthday Puebla!

The foundation of Puebla is celebrated since the 20th century on April 16th, but before this century, the foundation was commemorated on September 29th. Why?
Because the city of Puebla was founded twice.

On April 16, 1531, in the chapel of Santa Elena located in the neighborhood of "El Alto", Fray Toribio de Benavente, aka "Motolinía" celebrated the founding mass of the city. Fifty houses and the church were built there. But only a month later, in May, torrential rains devastated the buildings, making it necessary to move the city to a higher and more protected place.
The choice was to relocate the town to the other side of the San Francisco River, in what today are the Municipal Palace and the Cathedral. Streets were laid out and divided into lots until on September 29, 1531, the civil and definitive founding of the city took place on the day of San Miguel Arcángel. The Royal Charter signed by Queen Isabella of Portugal states that the City of Angels was founded on the day of St. Michael—September 29th— which is why this angel is the patron saint of the city.

Celebrate the spring equinox in the archaeological site of Cantona, the most urbanized city of the pre-Hispanic Mexico.

The Aztecs celebrated the spring equinox on March 10 or 13 and honoured Xipe Totec (Red Tezcatlipoca), one of the energies of the four directions that give origin and maintain the universe. Xipetotec is the masculine direction where the sun rises and represents the journey of the sun until noon. It symbolizes regeneration and renovation. The feast of this god was called Tlacaxipehualiztli.

You will be guided through the maze of avenues and narrow streets of this pedestrian walled city of 2.6 km2, dating back to 350 BC. You will discover, temples, “tlachtli” ball games and patios for ceremonies and sacrifices. You will climb the Mirador Pyramid from which you will get an exceptional view on the valley and the Citlaltépetl "Star Mountain", the highest elevation in all of Mexico. Your guide will explain you how all pyramids are orientated according to the sun.

The Convent of Santa Rosa de Lima in Puebla was built in the 17th century. This convent is an icon in America of the Feminine Conventual Architecture for the Dominican nuns.
But above all this convent is where Sister Andrea Asuncion invented in 1640 the most traditional dish of Puebla and the mestizo culinary art: the Mole Poblano made from 10 different chilies, seeds, fruits, tortilla and chocolate.

Discover the convent of Santa Rosa in a private tour to know everything about the history of the Mole Poblano.

On March 3, 2010, the gastronomy of Puebla was officially declared Intangible Cultural Heritage, a recognition of something locals have always known: Puebla is one of the great culinary capitals of Mexico.
When travelers think of Mexican food, they often imagine tacos and margaritas. But in Puebla, cuisine is an art form shaped by centuries of history.
This is the birthplace of mole poblano, a complex, velvety sauce blending chiles, spices, nuts, seeds, and a touch of chocolate. It’s where chiles en nogada were created, a dish so symbolic it reflects the colors of the Mexican flag. In Puebla, food is not just a meal, it’s identity, tradition, and storytelling served on a plate.
The city’s culinary heritage is the result of a unique fusion: Indigenous roots, Spanish influence, convent traditions, and global trade routes that once passed through New Spain. Every bite carries history.
Beyond its extraordinary cuisine, Puebla reveals a world of colonial architectural elegance, vibrant traditional markets, and a deeply rooted cultural identity.
The region is also home to a rich pre-Hispanic legacy, where ancient ceremonial centers such as Great Pyramid of Cholula stand as monumental witnesses to the sophisticated civilizations that shaped this land long before the colonial era. The heritage of the Aztec world and other Mesoamerican cultures remains present, not only in its archaeological sites, but in its flavors, rituals, and living traditions.
If you are seeking a destination where history and flavor meet at the highest level, Puebla deserves a place on your itinerary.
Because the most discerning journeys are measured in taste, memory, and meaning.
