I never would have believed that I’d turn 43 in Vietnam, but here I am in a mountain town I didn’t know of until a few months ago, visiting the most charming cafes, with my perfect little family.

I will always remember this birthday and Christmas, adventurous and intimate.

Oaxaca Itinerary: 1 Week
(The one I share with my close friends and family) from a longtime resident.
A post that has been so many years in the making, and I finally dedicated several hours to it.

To be honest, this is a bit of a love letter to all my favorite people, places and things in querida Oaxaca, before I move on to our year in Asia.

Summer moments at in Puerto Escondido ✨

This quiet and beautiful boutique hotel is one of my new favorite places to stay in Puerto, away from the noise of construction or partying, and only one block from the beach, the hotel features views and sounds of the waves breaking.

We loved that our room was a full apartment with a separate kitchen, bedroom and huge closet and bathroom. So comfortable and so beautiful. 🌴

[ES en los comentarios ] We need your help! 🙏🐶 Do you know anyone who would be interested in fostering our dog while we are out of the country for a year? We had someone lined up but that has fallen through. We’d really appreciate if you’d help share this.

We are looking for someone to foster our low maintenance and sweet dog while we leave the country for a year. (Starting in October but flexible with dates as we have family who can take her for a short time)

Coatli is almost 7 years old and we adopted her 5 years ago. She is a mixed breed dog rescued from the streets, just a bit smaller than medium size.

Fortunately she’s never had any health problems, has all her vaccines, and is super low maintenance. She loves to sleep all day and is happy with one walk or space to run around. She’s a really good guard dog to take care of the house and she’s lived alongside our toddler since she was born so has no problems with kids.

We will pay all her food and any visit to the vet, or kennel if someone needs/wants to travel. We have a really good vet who knows Coatli well. Please let me know if you’d like to meet her. :)

This might be a good situation for someone here temporarily who’d like some pet companionship. Or a dog lover who’d like to try out having their own dog. Or someone with dogs who feels like the more the merrier? Please share and get in touch with any questions.

San Jose del Pacifico - cool mountain escape 3 hours from Oaxaca city.

San Jose is 2500 meters (8200 feet) above sea level, and perched at the tip of a mountain so the air is cool and it’s often windy.

We went last weekend impulsively. We’ve been feeling trapped in the city and needed a break in nature. So we rented a cabin outside of cell/wifi service and let our brains rest.

Friday - left in the afternoon and arrived just before sunset. Checked in and then went out for dinner with a view as the sun dipped behind the mountains. Made a fire and turned in.

Saturday - watched the sunrise and had a slow morning making coffee on our patio and enjoying the warm sun and the cool air.

Breakfast at our favorite restaurant (memelas, salsa de huevo and enfrijoladas, plus of course chocolate de Agua and a co**ha). Then walked around town and then hiked up to the mirador.

Make to the cabin for a shower and Saby’s nap. Arturo and I sat out on the patio until it started raining. Then we all took a nap.

Out for lunch (Chile relleno, Caldo de pollo, quesadilla) then sipped a beer to wait out a downpour. Back to the cabin in between rain showers and built a fire and roasted marshmallows. After Saby went to bed, Arturo and I sat on the patio and snacked on charcuterie in the crisp air.

Sunday - Woke up to a wet morning as we were literally in the cloud. Had coffee in the cabin, packed up, then out for breakfast with a view (enfrijoladas, chilaquiles, omelette de champinones), checked out and headed home.

It was exactly the reset we needed. 🌳🌲 Will share some of my favorite places soon.

Last month we spent a perfect weekend at this gorgeous and spacious Airbnb - Casa de los Milagros 💕

This is a perfect Airbnb for families or small groups - it has 3 bedrooms, a living room, chef’s kitchen and dining area, large central patio, and upstairs balcony and terrace.

I hate Airbnbs that feel like a copy-paste, and have no personality. This is a home, and it feels like one. We felt relaxed and comfortable right away, lounging in the living room, having a cocktail on the rooftop terrace, or preparing food in the kitchen.

The decor is beautifully traditional Mexican, with colorful accents, embroidered pillows, traditional dishware, and some modern touches mixed in.

I highly recommend this for a beautiful and comfortable stay right in the heart of Oaxaca city. Comment CASA for the link, they don’t have an Instagram!

Saby will grow up secure, loved, and full of fun memories because of you. You have an incredibly big heart but it grew impossibly bigger when Sabina was born and continues to do so everyday. We love you so much. ❤️❤️❤️
