Sabine's Happy Trails

Sabine's Happy Trails I am a photographer, but not just any kind. I photograph anything and everything that inspires me. There is so much we know and yet don’t know.

And through my photos, I share my experiences and lessons learnt along the way. Happy trails is a journey into the wonders of creation, a journey of discovery, a journey into ourselves. It all started in 2013 when I took some time away by myself in Indonesia, and that was when I realised how much I didn’t know and how much there is to life, I have taken for granted. I grew up with a passion for p

hotography. And in order to do this, I found myself exploring places I have never heard of. Plus, I have an adventurous streak in me, the more I explored the more I was curious, the more I wanted to learn about the life around me. "Like a baby, I opened my eyes for the first time in my life, again”

After 10 years, I quit the advertising industry altogether. But with my knowledge and expertise, and my love for photography, I am hoping that through my photos of my travels, I am able to bring appreciation to the communities, culture, heritage and environment that makes my home, Malaysia, home. Many of these places are at threat in the name of development. And a lot of it has disappeared even before it was given a chance to be experienced. So I want to share with you these places, to prove to you that our home Malaysia, truly is beautiful and all that we have is irreplaceable. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.

I call them Happy Trails because my little weekend escapes from the city is what cured me from the stresses of societal expectations. I couldn’t conform anymore because I realised that there is more to life than to the pandering demands of present day pressures.

Took a drive down to the river to sibuk sibuk with the folk. Some where done for the day, and some were still at it. Saw a couple sitting under the tree cleaning fish.

So they told me, this is a once a year affair, 'Pesta Ikan'. It did feel like a pesta because families were gathered sorting and cleaning their catch, picnicking while the little ones played nearby.

They dont know what the real name of this fish is, but they call it 'ikan hanyut' or loosely translated, drift fish. I suppose the fish just drift when the river swells.

We're quite upstream, just wondering if the other villages downstream get any.

Having breakfast on my verandah and watching the men drift their nets in the rain. The monsoon season has begun. River rising. Plenty fish. Ikan hanyut.

Kinda miss Malacca, watching the fishermen go off in their boats, and sometimes, a single fellow in the sea with his langgiang.

Driving home to Kg. Kuala Sat, just after the rain. I cannot describe the feeling just looking at the view every time I am on this road. Breathtaking is putting it mildly. Photos cannot capture the essence of the real thing.

Post Box at Kg. Kuala Sat. The more I discover the villages in Ulu Tembeling, the more I realise how blessed I am. They have only just begun.

The views out do each other every day. Different light, different sky, different colour. Even on a gloomy day, it can be the most beautiful sight your eyes have ever seen. There isn't a hint of pollution in the air. Your eyes see as far as it can take you. The shades of green change to shades of blue, just another natural optical illusion.

But in all this, I stand in awe at the wisdom of the creator. For wisdom was created first, and the rest came into being. We may not see it, but every living cell in the forest supports our ability to live. My God, How Great Thou Art!

We arrived home parked and the aroma of burnt wood was in the air. Turned behind and saw the ladies cooking lemang at the back of the mosque. Naturally, we were invited for lunch. They were fed up with meat so it was vegetarian today... jantung pisang, brinjal, pucuk uni rebus and my favourite... BUDU.

I've never had lemang cooked so perfectly tender and lemak before. I think I over ate la. Really tak malu. But they were happy I wasn't shy.

The land of Buffaloes... that's Ulu Tembeling. Every kampong has buffalo herders. I was quite amazed at their grazing fields and pens, shaded by tall jungle trees, and rubber trees with their own bath pools to cool down. All they do is graze. They may look intimidating but I was surprised at their shy nature. They just go about grazing and chewing from one spot to another, not giving anything around them a second thought.

Recently I attended a talk hosted by the Veterinary department, and i must say, it was very informative especially on diseases these gentle creatures are prone to if not taken care off. But no, I haven't tasted buffalo meat yet, perhaps one day.

I haven't seen cows up here yet. But buffalo herding is an old trade passed down from generations. The amount of buffaloes one has determines the wealth status. Although only some are herders.
