Terengganu Peranakan Trail – A Uniqueness
Kampung Tiruk, Terengganu, is one of the earliest Peranakan Chinese villages in the state. A visit to the Peranakan homes highlights their lifestyle — their wooden houses are almost identical to traditional Malay houses, except that the front doors are decorated with Chinese couplets known as tui lian, and the main hall features an ancestral altar.
A Peranakan Terengganu lunch showcases unique flavors. Most of the dishes are based on traditional Terengganu Malay recipes, enriched with added value and slight adaptations to suit Peranakan taste.
The Cheng Ho Shrine is located on the banks of the Nerus River in Kampung Jeram. Admiral Cheng Ho is believed to have arrived in Terengganu in 1414, and to commemorate his visit, the Peranakan Chinese community built a memorial about 80 years ago.
At Setiu Beach lies a distinctive fishing village, where one of the settlements consists of around ten Peranakan Chinese community houses. The Peranakan houses in Setiu differ in architectural style from those in Kampung Tiruk. The local community here is involved in producing anchovies, dried fish, budu (fermented anchovy sauce), and belacan (shrimp paste).
The trail also includes a visit to Terrapuri Heritage Village, a restoration project of 29 ancient Palaces and Aristocratic Houses, aged between 100 to 250 years, where visitors can enjoy lunch. Among them, Rumah Jeram stands out as a Peranakan house.
