"Seeing these places, visiting the memorials and the museums, talking to people whose parents or grandparents experienced the events firsthand – those experiences made everything real. Over 13 months on the road, those were my most meaningful travel experiences.

They made me think, they changed my perspective and, most of all, they made me care."

I look back on my most meaningful travel experiences, including visiting Warsaw, Chernobyl, the Khatyn Memorial in Belarus and the Armenian Genocide Museum.

A few days back we posted about Card Sorting and how we used this technique to analyze our observations / findings so this is a picture of our team in action!

Quick Recap on Card Sorting Technique:

1. Populate the cards into 'islands'
2. Populate the 'islands' into categories; i.e Problems, Solutions, Findings
3. Refine the categories. Discuss.
4. Repeat until all the categories are in line with one another.
5. Record the final outputs.

The observation session was done and it was time to discuss the findings/observations. For the discussion session, our IHL mentor had suggested to use the card sorting method to organize our findings and categorize them into 'Problems' and 'Suggested Solutions'.

First, we focused on the problems that were recorded by us and populate similar problems into small 'islands'.
Then, based on the 'islands', the generalized problems were identified.

After that, the 'Suggested Solutions' were chosen based on the narrowed problems. Any additional solutions that were not originally from the 'Suggested Solutions' were welcomed to be included in the discussion. Then, the solutions were narrowed based on importance and those that did not make the top list were recorded and kept for future iteration/adjustments/updates.

Throughout the card sorting activity, our IHL mentor acted as the mediator since he was not involved in the observation activity. This was to avoid any biased views during the discussion session.

The card sorting activity is really a great activity to conduct when discussing ideas, problems and solutions. It is also low tech hence it is inexpensive to carry out the activity.

In order to gain further insight on what types of challenges the tourists might face when visiting Melaka, we went for a trip to Bandar Hilir, Melaka (the most famous tourist destination in Melaka) to observe and experience as if we were visiting tourists in Melaka.

We chose to visit the Melaka River Cruise and rode trishaws as both rides offer fixed routes for viewing the tourist attractions. Hence, it will be easier to conduct the observations since the fixed routes acted as a constant variable. Each member of our team were required to record our experiences, feelings and observations throughout the whole journey.

We made the most of our observations by riding the trishaws and the river cruise for both the day and night sessions to see if we were to encounter with different experiences at different times.

Everyone was required to keep the recordings for themselves until the discussion session is held.
