The Namaqua chameleon is one of Klein-Aus Vista’s special desert residents. Sadly, they are sometimes injured or killed by vehicles on the roads, especially because they blend so well into the surrounding sand and stones. You can help protect them by keeping to the speed limits, driving slowly, and watching the road carefully as you move through the farm.
If you see a chameleon crossing the road, here’s how you can help:
Step 1: First observe the direction it is moving. This helps you know which side of the road it is trying to reach.
Step 2: If it is safe to do so, gently move the chameleon off the road and 15m+ into the veld on the side it was already heading towards. Some chameleons may hiss or give a small defensive pinch when frightened, so handle them calmly and carefully.
Step 3: Please send our team a picture and tell us where the chameleon was spotted, so we can keep track of these special sightings.
Thank you for helping us protect the small desert lives that make Klein-Aus Vista so unique.
