Once, long ago, Sandwich Harbour was a small fishing haven — a place where life clung to the edges of the great Namib Desert. In 1977, it was a thriving wetland, its lagoon cradled by towering dunes and the endless Atlantic, home to fishermen, seabirds, and a handful of brave souls who dared call it home.
But nature has its own story to tell. The ocean shifted, the desert moved, and the little harbour began to vanish under the sweeping sands. Wooden houses sank into the dunes, ghostly reminders of lives once lived. Trees that once stood proud now lie as skeletons, twisted and bleached by sun and sea. Even the black rocks along the shore whisper of a time when tides were different, and the harbour still breathed with human life.
Today, all that remains are the echoes of the past — broken beams, scattered roots, and the breathtaking view of the lagoon stretching to the horizon. Yet it is here, in this silence, that Sandwich Harbour reveals her true beauty. She is no longer a harbour for boats but a sanctuary for the soul. Flamingos wade in the shallows, jackals cross the dunes, and the desert itself seems alive with memory.
