GOLDEN GIRL BA’s youngest ever flight attendant reveals what it’s been like to work for the airline over 41 years – and why the golden age of flying wasn’t all that

Julie Reynolds tells all about her lengthy career in the air and explains we've never had it so good when it comes to flying

EXCLUSIVE

Updated: 18th August 2018, 10:36 am

FLIGHT attendant Julie Reynolds has worked on British Airways since 1977 – when she was just 18 years and four days – and was the youngest flight attendant in BA history.

She’s travelled 12.8million miles during her career and has flown to almost every country in the world.

12

Julie has flown with British Airways for 41 years as a member of cabin crew

In that time, Julie, now 59, has watched plane travel turn from something only the rich could afford to an annual event for most Brits.

From serving the royal family to working the famous Concorde flights, Julie has seen it all - and reveals that the golden age of plane travel in the 1960s and 70s wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Julie lives in Cheshire with her husband and has five kids, with one daughter called Keeley-Jade, 29, who even followed her mum into the career.

Julie told us: “I was a flying nut even as a kid. I lived near Heathrow Airport as a child and would love to plane spot."

12

Julie on her first day in the job in 1977 - she was BA's youngest ever flight attendant

12

Julie, pictured here in 1980, always knew that she wanted to be a member of cabin crew

Julie was working in the offices at British Airwaysat the age of 17 when she applied to work as a flight attendant.

She said: “I heard that the company was recruiting for new cabin crew in the same building I worked in. I was asked to do an interview on the spot that day at 4pm.

“When I got the job my manager had to be my guarantor to assure the company that I was mature enough to work on planes.”

But her first flight wasn’t as glamorous as you might imagine.

She said: “I flew from London to Newcastle. It wasn’t always that glitzy. But I took it all in my stride.”

Despite Julie having taken to the skies during the “golden age” of flying, she believes that we actually have it much better these days.

She said: “These days air travel is accessible for most people - a lot of the mystique has been taken away.

“The seats back then weren’t half as comfy as they are now, and you’d only get the choice of chicken or beef for dinner - no veggie option."

12

Julie says that people used to get much more dressed up for flights in the past, but that has all now changed

Even though they'd have been forgiven for wearing a tracksuit on less comfy seats, the public did make a lot more effort to dress up for a flight.

Julie said: “Women would wear a jacket and skirt suit with a hat and matching handbag and men would wear a suit and a tie.

“Nowadays people pick leggings and jumpers because fashion is more about comfort. Nobody wants to sit on a 12-hour flight with a tie on.”

12

Flying has got much more comfortable for flight attendants over the years too.

She said: “Nowadays we have our cabin crew bunkswhere we can go for a sleep during a long hail flight. We can put on our pyjamas and have a nap.”

Julie says she’s just as happy working in economy as she is in first class – and has served numerous actors, pop stars and royalty on planes, although she won't reveal exactly who.

She said: “The royals especially like BA because of its heritage and history.”

Julie did a round-the-world trip on Concorde, stopping off in Vegas as well as Hawaii and Hong Kong

In her time, Julie has flown to almost every country in the world.

She said: “I was also fortunate enough to fly a round-the-world trip on Concorde. It stopped off in Dallas, Las Vegas, Honolulu, Fiji, Bali and New York in just one trip."

Julie has to deal with passengers who might try and flirt with her on board, but she says she has a good technique for fending them off.

We all make mistakes, but when it comes to travelling abroad, we can make costly mistakes without even trying. Some of them are quick to fix and easily forgotten, others can be expensive, and time-consuming.

When next you are travelling abroad, Jumia Travel highlight mistakes you should avoid.

Failing to Check their Passport Dates

Did you know that many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months after your return? If you go through customs with a passport that is soon to expire, you may be turned away. Check the passport regulations for your destination country well in advance of your trip.

Forgetting to buy travel insurance

Many travellers forget to buy travel insurance, but having a good travel insurance plan is cheap and smart protection from accidents, injuries and illnesses, passport and card theft, and even travel delays. Travellers who buy travel insurance know that they have the coverage they need in a travel emergency as well as a person to call for help when things go wrong on their trip.

Packing the wrong things

If a traveller packs well, they will have the right clothing, medicine, and tools they need to be comfortable. While you can’t plan for everything that can go wrong, having what you need when you need it can make a big difference in your safe and healthy return back home. Additionally, do not pack too many things.

Forget travel adapters

The electrical plugs that are standard in your home country are not the same in other countries, and you will need adapters to use your electronic devices and appliances. Buy the adapters you need for the country you are visiting and whatever you do, if the plug doesn’t fit, don’t force it.

Convert currency at expensive places

Travelling abroad is never cheap and it can get even more expensive when converting currency. Getting the best exchange rate is important. The best way to exchange currency is by visiting official bureau de changes.

In March 2010 she proposed five stadiums, the stadium projects launched was designed by German architect; Albert Speer& Partners.
In her proposal to FIFA, she will build nine stadiums and three stadiums will be renovated. The twelve venues will be divided among seven host cities which are Al-Daayen,Al-Khor,Al-Rayyan,Umm Slal, Doha, Al-Shamal and Al-Wakrah.
The stadium will employ cooling systems that are environmentally friendly in overcoming the challenging temperature of the country.

She experiences high temperature in the middle of the year reason why FIFA 2022 will be held late November to middle December, FIFA world cup 2022 duration will be less than 32 days.

After the world cup she intends to disassemble parts of the stadium to help developing countries make twenty and two stadiums.

In addition, the world cup will cost Qatar approximately £138 billion( US $220 billion) which is 60 times the $ 3.5 billion that South Africa spent on FIFA world cup 2010.

Qatar stadiums will be a great tourist attraction that will attract tourists from far and near; all because of her magnificence.

Day Seven:
Obudu Cattle Ranch

Exploring The Tourism Potential Of Obudu Mountain Resort
Located on a plateau of about 1,576 metres above sea level at Obanliku Local Government Area in northern Cross River State, the Obudu Cattle Ranch, as it was formerly known, was established in 1949 by Mr. McCaughley, a Scottish rancher who camped on the mountaintop for a month before returning with his fellow rancher, Mr. Hugh Jones, who in 1951, together with Dr. Crawfeild developed the ranch.
While the Ranch Resort may have played host to the country’s former leaders in the past, its recent patronage, at two separate intervals, by President Goodluck Jonathan and his Sierra Leonian counterpart, Ernest Bai Koroma, highlights expressively its potential as a congenial place salutary for retreat not only for top government functionaries but also for those who value relaxation.
If anything, the visit to the Ranch comes as a bold attestation it is indeed a place of national pride, and indeed a rendezvous to showcase to the world nature’s holidaying spot, a sanctuary where world leaders converge.

Day Eight:
Sightseeing tour to the following location:

a. Marina Resort: The Marina Resort in Calabar sits on a great historical site, the water mouth of Calabar. It stands near old slave trade sites, where an estimated 30% of the slaves that left the shores of Africa were deported. Today, the Marina Resort is a preserved historical site and recreation center. Here you will find the iconic slave history museum, hotel, restaurant; night club, a carousel for the children and extraordinary views of the Calabar River. For the Original contestants who got to spend a whole day before the show exploring Calabar, it was a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

b. Calabar Museum

Housed in the beautiful old British governor’s building overlooking the river, the museum has a fascinating collection covering Calabar’s days as the seat of the Efik kingdom, the slave and palm-oil trade, and the colonial period. Open between 9am and 6pm daily, the Calabar Museum charges an admission fee.
An interesting part about Calabar Museum is that it was designed and constructed in parts in Glasgow, and transported to Nigeria over a series of shipments. Calabar has a long history of colonial rule, and this museum represents the era. The museum has also preserved precious papers and documents pertaining to the colonial times.
The museum offers free guided tours during off-peak periods. You can gain an in-depth knowledge about the colonial past of Calabar at the museum. There is a big library that holds legal and constitutional documents in their original forms. The upper floor has been preserved with original furnishings of the time when it was used by colonial settlers. The
antiquity, exhibits and artifacts at the museum can engage the attention of interested visitors for several hours. Unfortunately no cameras are allowed in the museum.

Cross River National Park, Cross River State
c.Cross River National Park is one of top Nigeria’s eco-tourism destinations where tropical rain forest rare animals and birds can be observed in their natural habitat.
The project has created a proper boundary for the park, and programs are being implemented against illegal hunting, logging and land clearance.
The Park is home to many localised species of plants and animals which, include gorilla, drill, chimpanzee, a gwantibo or golden potto forest elephant, saleginella specie. Baboons, Leopards, Red Foxes, Drill Monkeys, Buffaloes and Elephants are also found there. It also harbours a rich collection of flora and fauna.

Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary

d. Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary is manage by Cross River State Forestry Commission and it homes rare chimpanzees, gorillas and drill monkeys. Find out more about Africa’s rare chimpanzees, gorrilas and drill monkeys.
The forests on Afi Mountain are a barrier against the encroaching derived savannah from the west and north. In 1993, Pandrillus started community protection patrols using local hunters to discourage shooting and trapping, an education programme in the 17 villages surrounding the mountain, and brought the communities together as a common interest group for the first time.
