Now, before you pack your bags, here are some quick tips to make the most of your Owu adventure:

Getting there is part of the fun! The nearest city is Ilorin, about 60 km away. You can reach Ilorin by bus (recommended for easier access to Owu) or train. Once in Ilorin, consider booking a hotel that offers transportation to the falls.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐋𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐤𝐢𝐭𝐢'𝐬 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞: 𝐀 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭'𝐬 𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞

As part of our weekly "Traveler's Stories," I'm excited to share my own travel adventure. Despite being a native of Ekiti State, my first trip to this beautiful region as a student of Ekiti State University (EKSU) was an unforgettable experience.

𝗠𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆

I came across these pictures in my gallery and decided to share my experience. The day I began another journey of my life, my dad took me to the motor park at Ojota to board a bus going to Ekiti. Although I am an indigene, I had never been to Ekiti nor imagined I would study at EKSU. Initially, I had other plans for university, but destiny had a different path for me.

I had mixed feelings—sadness for traveling alone on such a long distance for the first time, and happiness for finally starting university, free from house chores and parental stress. After a long wait at the park for the bus to fill up, we prepared for departure. I said my goodbyes to my dad, feeling overwhelmed with happiness.

The journey began, and I plugged in my earpiece, determined not to fall asleep. I observed the environment through the bus window. However, our bus developed a fault at Iyin Ekiti, causing a long delay. We eventually reached Ekiti past 6 PM, after leaving Lagos at 9:30 AM.

During the journey, a woman discussed how parents should take their children to their hometowns. Her words struck a chord with me as I quietly listened. At the last bus stop, I waited for my dad’s brother to pick me up. The bike men at Fajuyi Park offered to take me, but I declined, following my dad’s brother's instructions.

Arriving in Ado-Ekiti, I was thrilled to see a city similar to Lagos, full of life and opportunities. But as we moved towards Iworoko, where EKSU is situated, I realized that Ekiti is different—no railway stations, yellow commercial buses, or heavy traffic like Lagos. The primary modes of transportation are small buses (korope) and motorcycles.

My dad's brother dropped me off at my aunt's place, where I received a warm welcome. Adjusting to my new environment, I learned to fetch water from a well and adapt to a lifestyle without the conveniences of Lagos. As I began my lectures, I encountered diverse people and new experiences, truly embracing university life.

This journey taught me that life in Ekiti is unique and different from Lagos, highlighting the beauty of change and adaptation. My first travel to Ekiti as an EKSU student was a transformative experience, blending the excitement of new beginnings with the comfort of returning to my roots.
