WORK HOURS ALLOWED ON A UK STUDENT VISA
If you’re coming to the UK as a student, it’s important to know how many hours you can work so you stay within the rules and avoid visa problems.
Most full-time students on a degree-level course are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time. These hours can be spent in part-time campus jobs (like working in the library or student union) or in local shops, restaurants, and offices. You cannot work more than 20 hours in any given week, even if you hold more than one job, and you should not rely only on work to cover your living costs, you will still need proof of funds when you apply.
If your course is below degree level (for example, an English language course), the limit is usually 10 hours per week during term time. Always check your visa letter (the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, or CAS) to see which limit applies to your specific course.
When your university or college is officially on break (for example, between semesters or over the summer), you can work full-time. “Full-time” means as many hours as your employer offers you, without the 20-hour cap. Just be sure you really are on an official break, working full-time outside those dates is not allowed.
Even if you stay within the hourly limits, there are certain jobs that are off limits. You cannot be self-employed, engage in business activities, work as a professional sportsperson or entertainer, or take a permanent full-time position. Volunteering for a registered charity is allowed, as long as it is truly unpaid and you do not get any benefits in return.
