UK Flights Hit by Air Traffic Control Failure ✈️🇬🇧

Travel across parts of the UK has been disrupted today, after a technical problem at NATS’ Prestwick air traffic control centre in Scotland affected the management of aircraft in northern UK airspace. The disruption has affected Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, with delays and cancellations reported at Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast International and Belfast City airports.

The City of Derry Airport has also reported disruption. Airlines including Ryanair, easyJet and British Airways have warned passengers about disruption. Ryanair said around 25,000 of its passengers are experiencing disruption and they have over 140 flights delayed. EasyJet confirmed some cancellations as well. But not to worry, NATS says the technical problem at Prestwick has now been fixed.

Engineers are working with airports and airlines to safely remove the temporary air-traffic restrictions and restore normal operations. However, delays and cancellations may continue as aircraft and crews are being repositioned. Passengers are advised to check directly with their airline before travelling to the airport. 1. Robertson scholars program
This is a highly selective undergraduate scholarship and leadership program shared by Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC).
Robertson provides eight semesters of tuition, room, board, and most mandatory fees at either Duke or UNC.
Deadline: Early - October 15. Regular - November 15

2. Jefferson scholarship
The program covers the cost of tuition, room, board, books, and miscellaneous expenses for eight semesters. It also provides funding and opportunities for enrichment experiences.
Interested candidates cannot apply on their own. An eligible high school recommends a student through a nomination process. Deadline for nominations is December 1

3. Richmond scholars program
The Richmond Scholars award covers full tuition, housing, and food for up to eight consecutive semesters of full-time undergraduate study. The university currently awards it to 25 incoming students each year.
Scholars are also eligible for a one-time $5,500 enrichment grant for a student-selected activity that enhances their academic experience.
Deadline: December 1

4. Lester B. Pearson program
The Pearson Scholarship covers tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence support for four years of undergraduate study at the University of Toronto. U of T currently expects to select about 37 Pearson Scholars per year.
Your high school must nominate you, and each school can nominate only one student per year. Deadline for nominations: October 9

5. Reach Oxford scholarship
This scholarship covers your course fees, grant for living costs, and one return airfare to your home country per year. It lasts depending on the duration of your course. But it is exceptionally competitive. About 2 or 3 reach scholarships are awarded yearly.
To be considered for this opportunity , you must first apply to Oxford university through normal undergraduate admission processes and receive an admission offer. Deadline: January 26

🇬🇧 UK Home Secretary Discusses Proposed Earned Settlement for Immigrants.
There has been a lot of discussion about Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s plans to introduce an “earned settlement” system in the UK. But what exactly does that mean?

Under the current system, many migrants on qualifying immigration routes can normally apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after five years of continuous residence, provided they meet the relevant requirements. Mahmood’s proposed earned settlement model would change that approach. Instead of settlement being based primarily on completing a fixed period of residence, the government proposes that migrants should demonstrate that they have earned the right to settle through their contribution, and conduct in the UK.

The standard qualifying period for settlement would increase from five years to 10 years for most migrants. The government has proposed taking factors such as economic contribution, employment, tax and National Insurance contributions, English-language ability, good character and compliance with immigration rules into account. The proposal is not intended only for people who arrive in the UK after the new system begins.

The government's consultation explicitly stated that the proposed changes would apply to people already in the UK who have not yet been granted ILR. People who have already obtained settlement will not have that status taken away. However, someone who is currently on a temporary visa and has not yet received ILR could potentially be brought under the new earned-settlement rules once they come into force.

New Zealand has announced the introduction of the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, set to officially open for applications on November 16, 2026.

This is specifically designed for eligible international graduates who have completed their studies in the country but do not qualify for the longer-term Post-Study Work Visa. It grants successful applicants six months of open work rights, allowing them to remain in the country and work for any employer without needing a pre-secured job offer at the time of application.

For international students, this allows them to transition smoothly from academic life into the workforce. To qualify, students must have completed a full-time New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework Level 5, 6, or 7 qualification lasting at least 24 weeks, while maintaining at least NZ$5,000 in personal funds and meeting standard health and character checks.

Applications must be submitted within three months of the expiration of their original student visa. It's also important to note that this visa is a one-time grant that cannot be extended or renewed, serving primarily as a bridge to help graduates find stable employment and pivot to longer-term options, like the Accredited Employer Work Visa.

This visa does not allow students to sponsor dependents or partners for visas. So if you're considering studying in New Zealand in 2026 or beyond, consider all of this and prepare yourself for application.

Have you ever heard of a town that had a population of one?
That town is Monowi. It is located on the open plains of northeastern Nebraska and is open to all but only one woman keeps it running. Her name is Elsie Eileen. Guinness World Records recognizes this town as one with the world's lowest population.

Founded in 1902 as a farming and railroad community, it reached a population of roughly 150 people during the 1930s. It had all the regular makings of an American town: a post office, a school, businesses, even a railroad connection. But one day the railroad service closed and trade declined. Residents started looking for opportunities elsewhere. Gradually, Monowi reduced to one couple, Elsie and her husband Rudy.

When Rudy died in 2004, Elsie became Monowi's only resident. She could have left too. Instead, she stayed. Remaining in Monowi meant she was both government and citizen. She currently serves as the city's mayor, clerk, treasurer and secretary, while also running the Monowi Tavern, the village's only business. She also maintains the library set up in her husband's memory.

The tavern brings travelers, neighbors and longtime customers through her doors, some coming from far distances simply to meet the woman who lives in a town of one. Visitors from across the United States and around the world have signed her guestbook.
There is something remarkable about Monowi; that one woman's warm persistence has kept this city running for what we can term her lifetime.
