•GETTING SET: China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) workers laying the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge track in Ijoko, Ogun State...yesterday

The Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail tracks will be ready in February, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Managing Director Fidet Okhiria said yesterday.

Okhiria, who spoke at Ijoko in Ogun State during the routine inspection of the $1.7 billion project, said by February 7, the corporation will begin a test-run of the tracks.

The managing director said the first phase of the project, which is meant to link Lagos with Abeokuta, is on course and will be achieved within the next 10 days.

According to him, the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), has completed the laying of tracks from Kajola (Kilometre 41, and Abeokuta, Kilometre 79), while efforts to get the project to Iju in Lagos will be achieved by February 7.

He said: “The contractors have said their equipment could lay 1.5 kilometres per day. That means they could achieve the 10-kilometre distance between Kajola and Iju within seven days, and we can start the test-run of the tracks, latest by February 7.”

Okhiria expressed satisfaction with the speed of the contractors, adding that with the civil works between Kajola and Iju completed, work would go on unhindered on the laying of tracks.

The NRC chief said the Federal Government had fully paid the compensations on all the property acquired for the project, adding that this facilitated the speedy pace of the project.

He said the transparency in the payment of the compensation engendered the prevailing peaceful atmosphere surrounding the ex*****on of the project.

The managing director said none of the contractors’ workers had been molested since the project started in 2017.

Driving

Apart from the potential hazards mentioned above, police roadblocks are very common outside of the city limits. Usually, you will be able to continue on your way after handing over a small bribe (or a larger one, should your counterpart decide that you committed a random “violation” of sorts). This can be quite intimidating, especially at night, as the officers will invariably be heavily armed. You are never in any kind of danger, but the sight of large guns alone can make many expats rather nervous.

Of course, this does not mean you should become a shut-in. Rental cars come with a driver; these experienced chauffeurs are skilled in bringing you to your destination, and they know how to deal with the aforementioned roadblocks. Their driving style is obviously as bold as the others’, though, so don’t forget to buckle up.

Traffic Conditions

A word of warning: it is probably best if expats do not actively participate in traffic at all. The poor state of the roads and the break-neck driving style of many Nigerians can make even life as a pedestrian adventurous, to say the least. Missing manhole covers and large potholes in the middle of the street are a Nigerian reality, and considerate driving is more or less unheard of.

Nigerian cars generally match the quality of Nigerian streets: They probably wouldn’t be considered roadworthy in most countries. As a general rule, any vehicle that runs – however badly – is considered a reasonable form of transport, be it in bumper-to-bumper city traffic or on the overused, fatality-prone highways.

Distracted driving is a deadly behavior. Federal estimates suggest that distraction contributes to 16% of all fatal crashes, leading to around 5,000 deaths every year. Our latest research has discovered that distraction "latency" lasts an average of 27 seconds, meaning that, even after drivers put down the phone or stop fiddling with the navigation system, drivers aren't fully engaged with the driving task.
