*THE STONEMEN OF ESIE, KWARA STATE*

Esie is a Yoruba town in Kwara state that is known for its 800 soapstone figures, which were turned into stone statues by the Elesie of Esie after they became a threat to the peace and security of the city.

Most of the figures have lost their heads or limbs. The soapstone figures of Esie are the largest collection of stone carvings in Black Africa, found in groves outside the town of Esie.

They have facial marks of three horizontal lines between the eyes and ear, vertical lines on the chin, and wear necklaces and bracelets. No two of the 800 soapstone figures look exactly the same, and all have dates of their origin undetermined.

Esie is also a place of great spiritual significance to the Yoruba people, and houses the world's largest collection of standing stones..
