I love nature, not because I am a treehugger but it seems to be the most true thing around. From the free and pure songs of the birds, to the trees that reach out their branches to show they care and provide some form of shade on hot days without asking to get paid. If only we knew what we were made for like the animals maybe we wouldn't have so much troubles and problems like we do.

Welcome to 2015... We hope we (at Kingfisher SDPs) would be able to be more proactive in our campaign this year and implement some of our projects. I would keep you posted on the projects as they come up. What we stand for and would always promote is sustainable development through tourism especially in Nigeria and we hope our campaign would begin to take shape in 2015. Sure looking forward to a great year with you all.

Getting it right from the roots...

Thinking of the right and best approach to Kingfisher's campaign for sustainable development, I cannot help but wonder if this really makes sense... Talking sustainable development when development is yet to occur seems like putting the cart before the horse. Well, I pull strength from this thought, starting right could make the difference. If we can plan sustainability into the foundation and build on it, maybe, just maybe, we could get a close to perfect structure. Yes! I speak of Nigeria's tourism. WATCH THIS PAGE...

The FIFA World Cup has come and gone and so we wait for another 4 years. I really wanted Nigeria in the finals, wishful thinking you would say, but for now that's the only country I have and belong to. Well that is history now, looking forward to 2018 world cup.

During the world cup, I couldn't help but notice the passion with which the Brazilians sang their national anthem before every match they played. I had to search on google for the translated version and would love to share it with you:

The placid banks of the Ipiranga river heard
The resounding cry of a heroic people
And brilliant beams from the sun of liberty
Shone in our homeland's skies at that very moment.

If we have fulfilled the promise
Of equality by our mighty arms,
In thy bosom, O freedom,
Our brave breast shall defy death itself!

O beloved,
Idolized homeland,
Hail, hail!

Brazil, an intense dream, a vivid ray
Of love and hope descends to earth
If in thy lovely, smiling and clear skies
The image of the Southern Cross shines resplendently.

A giant by thine own nature,
Thou art a beautiful, strong and intrepid colossus,
And thy future mirrors thy greatness.

Beloved Land
Amongst a thousand others
Art thou, Brazil,
O beloved homeland!

To the sons of this land
Thou art a gentle mother,
Beloved homeland,
Brazil!

Mind you, I am not from Brazil but their passion is really enviable. A country almost torn apart by "matters arising" from the World Cup preparation and other issues, shocked to their toes by the 7 - 1 loss to Germany on home soil (I'm yet to recover from that myself) but still had the fire and fury to chant those lovely words even at their last match which they still lost - What more can I say?

But, what are we (as a people) passionate about? What do we live for or what can we die for? What wakes us in the morning and clouds our thoughts and dreams at night? How do we develop in a sustainable manner when we are yet to agree to our identity?

What makes you a Nigerian?

I have been off the grid and I do apologize for this. What have I been up to? Well I have been working (as I am a salary earner at the moment), learning the art and science of making money.

Still very much on my campaign for sustainable development. I haven't given up. Today, I'd like to share a little on Nigeria National Parks.

A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of wild nature for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. I like the ...national pride part in this definition. An example is the Yellowstone National Park in the U.S.A which is the first national park in the world.

I hear your thoughts... Yes! We have national parks (7 of them) in Nigeria and they are managed by the Nigeria National Parks Service (NNPS).

They include:
Chad Basin National Park in Borno/Yobe
Cross River National Park in Cross River
Gashaka-Gumti National Park in Adamawa/Taraba
Kamuku National Park in Kaduna
Kainji Lake National Park in Kwara/Niger
Okomu National Park in Edo
Old Oyo National Park in Oyo..more details can be found on the website: www.nigeriaparkservice.org

Yankari Game Reserve was a national park between 1991 and 2006 but is now managed by the Bauchi State Government. It is know to have one of the richest diversity of animals in Nigeria with the highest population of Elephants.

Through these parks, you would find that Nigeria is blessed with a rich and unique array of ecosystems, and a great variety of wild fauna and flora. This rich natural endowment is a product of the climatic variations resulting into various north-south gradations of habitats and ecosystems. The habitats support more than 1,340 species of animals among which is 274 mammalian species, making it the 8th highest in Africa.

These parks are open to visitors as they serve as tourist attractions as well as showcasing a rich diversity of animals (fauna) and plant/trees (flora). It is our Heritage and I encourage you to visit. Some of the animals (which would catch your attention) include elephants, olive baboons, hippos, waterbuck and even lions (Yes, even lions!). So I hope we get to realize more important use of nature asides - firewood, bush-meat and mystics through our parks.
