Three days ago, around 4 a.m., I received this flyer from my friend and university mate, Omobolanle Obey. I couldn't hold back my tears. She has been battling this illness for the past four years and has spent everything she has on treatment. She is also a mother of four young children who still need her.
Seeing people on TikTok every day begging for money to treat cancer and other life-threatening illnesses always breaks my heart. It also reminds me to thank God for giving me the courage to relocate my family to the UK, where access to healthcare has saved countless lives.
Some people say, "You pay tax, or "You pay for health insurance." Yes, that's true. But when a serious illness comes, you will realise that what you receive is worth far more than what you have contributed. I have personally benefited from the UK healthcare system beyond what I could ever repay. I even know a woman who had breast cancer, had one breast removed, and later had it reconstructed, all through the healthcare system.
Three years ago, I helped someone relocate to the UK. Less than a month after arriving, his wife gave birth through a Caesarean section, and every medical bill was covered. That is what it means when a system works.
Nigeria has the resources to provide quality healthcare, but the system must improve so that people are not left to beg for life-saving treatment.
Today, I am humbly appealing to everyone. Please help Bola fight for her life. No donation is too small, and if you cannot give, kindly share this appeal with someone who can.
May God bless every helping hand. Thank you.
