Here is a glimpse into a special project with GafferUdoh that preserves the stories, history, and lived experiences of our people. This trailer explores the Akwa Ibom perspective of the Biafran War…a perspective that is too often overlooked in the broader narrative.

Through the voices of elders, cultural leaders, and community members, we document memories, traditions, and lessons that have shaped generations. These stories are more than history; they are a bridge between the past and the future.

May our stories never be lost. May our culture never be forgotten. May future generations know where they come from and carry that knowledge forward with pride. Stay tuned for the full documentary!

Today’s Topic: Efik Dances!

For those new here (or learning), the Efik people are largely found in Calabar, Cross River State. “Efik dances are one of, if not the oldest, example in Nigeria of the semi Afro-European synthesis. The most obvious feature is the type of costume
worn by the dancers. Hoop skirts combine with raffia head-dresses, the crinoline and the farthingale with gourds and African anklets.

Drums play an important role in all Efik dances. These drums vary in shapes and sizes. Chief among them is the Ayara Ekomo, the male talking drum. In many dances this drum tells the dancers what to do. It orders them to intensify the singing, dance more vigorously, break into a frenzy or re-form into an orderly body. Other drums include the Ekpiri Ekomo, a small drum which sometimes takes the place of the talking drum, and the Uman Ekomo, the female or bass drum.”

I’ve been quite MIA on here…but for good reason! In May, I got married to my partner in life, forever supporter, and best friend. What a privilege it is to do life with you ❤️

You all know I had to be very intentional about our Akwa Ibom outfits and the Nsibidi we incorporated throughout our fabrics and accessories were perfect for representing both Akwa Ibom culture and an Akwa Ibom and Anambra union. They were my favorite outfits!

Major shoutout to for being the BEST wedding planner I could’ve asked for. When I say their team went above and beyond to make sure the couple, bridal party and family members were always taken care of, I mean it. Is it possible for us to have a 2nd wedding just to work with their team again? 😭 Truly grateful and I wouldn’t have made it through everything without them.

For many non-Igbos, the stories and experiences of the Biafran War have often been lost or forgotten. This book authored by Professor Philip Effiong, son of General Philip Effiong, second in command of Biafra, accounts for the Akwa Ibom and Annang perspective of the war. See the last slide for a video of soldiers pressing on to Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom during this time.

Professor Effiong describes key memories of his childhood navigating the challenging environment of constant chaos but also pays tribute to those that supported along the way. If you’re looking for a page turner and also an up close and personal read of a unique experience, this is the book for you.
