Did a Dutch boy really save the Netherlands by sticking his finger in a d**e?

It’s one of the most famous stories about the Netherlands, but the surprising truth is that it’s not based on an actual historical event.

The tale was popularised in 1865 by American author Mary Mapes Dodge in her children’s novel Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates. However, the boy who plugs the leak is a separate, unnamed character in the book, not Hans Brinker himself. The story also has earlier literary roots, including a French version published in the 19th century.

The story eventually became so associated with the Netherlands that a statue of the boy was erected in Spaarndam in 1950, partly to satisfy the curiosity of visitors looking for the famous hero.

It’s a brilliant example of how fiction can become part of a country’s identity, even when the story never actually happened.

What does a typical Dutch breakfast look like?

In the Netherlands, breakfast is often built around bread with toppings such as cheese, peanut butter, jam or hagelslag, the chocolate sprinkles many Dutch people grow up eating on buttered bread. Some people prefer yoghurt, cereal or muesli instead.

Throwback to September 1955, when birds in the Netherlands were beginning their autumn migration south.

Bird migration is one of nature’s great seasonal journeys. Every year, millions of birds pass through the Netherlands as they travel between their breeding grounds and wintering areas. Some are heading towards southern Europe, while others continue all the way to Africa.

Watching this footage from 1955 is a reminder that these incredible journeys were happening long before we had cameras in our pockets to capture them. Have you ever watched a flock of migratory birds passing overhead?

Planning a trip to Amsterdam this October?

Your "Dutch oven" isn't actually Dutch.

Back in the early 1700s, an English ironmaker named Abraham Darby traveled to the Netherlands to study how the Dutch cast metal pots in sand molds.

He brought the technique home, refined it, and patented his own version of the pot in England. The name stuck because of where the method came from, not because the pot itself is Dutch.

Here's the kicker: in the Netherlands, nobody calls it a "Dutch oven." It's called a braadpan, and most Dutch people have never heard the English name at all.

This is the most common reason given for the Dutch Oven, but there isn't full consensus on it!
