Welcome to one of Basel’s most captivating landmarks: the Tinguely Fountain (also known locally as ‘Fasnachtsbrunnen’).

Created in 1977 by the legendary Swiss kinetic artist Jean Tinguely, this whimsical water feature isn’t your typical city fountain.

Here are 4 fascinating facts to know before you visit:

🎭 The fountain sits on the exact spot where the stage of Basel’s old city theatre once stood.

🤖 Tinguely placed 10 motorized iron sculptures inside a shallow basin. Many were crafted using scrap metal and parts salvaged from the demolished theatre.

💃 The mechanical figures splash, spray, and interact with one another like actors, dancers, and mimes endlessly performing on a stage.

❄️ Because the machines run continuously, the fountain completely transforms in winter, freezing into surreal ice sculptures.

I arrived to Basel🇨🇭today, and spent the whole day at the Museum Tinguely

This wasn’t my first visit. I visited it a few years ago, but I was even more impressed with Jean Tinguely’s imagination, moving machines, and self-destructing artworks this time.

I’ll be researching Jean Tinguely and his connection to Basel during the next few days. So, this was a wonderful start.

🏛️⛲️🎨 Have you heard of Jean Tinguely?

If you have ever found yourself wandering through the elegant streets of Basel, you have probably stopped next to a playful water show. Nestled in the heart of the square is a shallow public basin filled with spinning, water-spouting mechanical sculptures that seem to have a joyful life of their own. This is the Tinguely Fountain, and it serves as the perfect, enchanting introduction to the brilliantly eccentric world of Jean Tinguely.

While he might not be as famous as his contemporaries like Andy Warhol or Pablo Picasso, this Swiss artist was one of the most fascinating innovators in modern art. Tinguely took the cold and serious world of industrial machinery and turned it completely on its head. In his hands, gears, motors, and scrap metal became beautifully chaotic and unpredictable. He gave these machines a soul, a sense of humour, creating some of the most interesting artworks of the 20th century.

If you're a music lover or history buff, you should visit St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche) in Leipzig 🇩🇪

🎹 For 27 years, Johann Sebastian Bach worked here as the Thomaskantor (Director of Music), shaping Western classical music as we know it.

⛪️ Today, you can explore its Gothic architecture, spot the beautiful window dedicated to him, and pay your respects at his final resting place right in front of the altar.

🎼 But, don't just look around! The church is still incredible active, organising regular live music performances in the very space Bach composed it for (especially during the annual Bach Fest held each year in June and happening right now).
