Tijdens de stadswandeling over Hugo de Groot stoppen we in de Schoolstraat. Deze straat dankt haar naam aan de Latijnse School die hier van de 14e tot de 18e eeuw gevestigd was 📖. Jongens kregen hier vanaf ongeveer hun 9e les in Latijn en andere vakken. Zo ook Hugo de Groot! Maar... waar anderen er zo’n 6 jaar over deden, rondde hij de school al in slechts 2 jaar af 👏.

During the city walk about Hugo de Groot, we stop at Schoolstraat. This street owes its name to the Latin School that was located here from the 14th until the 18th century 📖. Boys started learning Latin and other subjects here from around the age of 9. Hugo de Groot studied here as well! But… while most students took around 6 years to complete their education, he finished it in just 2 years 👏.

Exact twee weken geleden was ik aanwezig op de jaarlijkse ambassadeursdag van Delft. Een van de hoogtepunten? Een exclusief kijkje achter de schermen bij de TU Delft. Hier staan we bij de indrukwekkende sleeptank van de faculteit Maritieme Techniek: een enorme waterbak waarin schaalmodellen van schepen worden getest op weerstand, golfslag en vaargedrag! 🛶🌊

Exactly two weeks ago, I attended Delft’s annual ambassadors day. One of the highlights? An exclusive behind-the-scenes tour at TU Delft. Here we are standing by the impressive towing tank of the Faculty of Maritime Engineering: a huge water basin where scale models of ships are tested for resistance, wave motion, and sailing behavior! 🛶🌊

Het Armamentarium; een verborgen stukje geschiedenis in de stad 🏛✨. Aan het begin van de zeventiende eeuw werd het eerste deel van dit arsenaal gebouwd als wapenopslag tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog ⚔️. In 1692 werd het complex uitgebreid met dit deel van het pand, dat nog altijd herinnert aan de militaire geschiedenis van Delft 📜.

The Armamentarium; a hidden piece of history in the city 🏛✨. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the first part of this arsenal was built as a weapons storage during the Eighty Years’ War ⚔️. In 1692, the complex was expanded with this section of the building, which still reflects Delft’s military history today 📜.

Het verzetsmonument aan de Nieuwe Plantage, onthuld op 4 mei 1950. Ter nagedachtenis aan alle Delftenaren die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog hun leven gaven in de strijd tegen de bezetter 🕊️.

The resistance monument at the Nieuwe Plantage, unveiled on May 4, 1950. In memory of all residents of Delft who gave their lives during World War II in the struggle against the occupying forces 🕊️.

De Koninklijke Gist- en Spiritusfabriek, opgericht in 1869 door Jacobus van Marken 🏭. Niet alleen een pionier in de gistproductie, maar ook een van de eerste sociale ondernemers, met vooruitstrevende ideeën over werknemerszorg: winstdeling, een pensioenregeling, ziektekostenvoorzieningen en woningen voor fabrieksarbeiders. Bijzonder voor die tijd en daarmee een uniek stukje Delftse geschiedenis ✨.

The Royal Yeast and Spirit Factory, founded in 1869 by Jacobus van Marken 🏭. Not only a pioneer in yeast production, but also one of the first social entrepreneurs, with forward-thinking ideas about employee welfare: profit-sharing, pension schemes, healthcare provisions, and housing for factory workers. Remarkable for its time and a unique piece of Delft’s history ✨.
