We understand people think bear cubs come in hugging size, but did you know taking an up-close photo of these wild animals can endanger their life?
Here are a few facts to always keep in mind when encountering bears and bear cubs.
🐻 Mother bears are highly protective. Getting too close can trigger defensive aggression, especially if cubs are present.
🐻 Stress can disrupt natural behaviour, including feeding, resting, or caring for cubs. Prolonged human presence can lead to abandonment of dens or cubs in extreme cases.
🐻 Repeated close encounters can make bears less fearful of humans. Habituated bears may start approaching people or populated areas, increasing the chance of human-wildlife conflicts. This often ends with the bear being euthanized for public safety.
🐻 When one person gets a good photo, others may try to do the same, creating a crowd. This makes it harder for the bear to escape, increasing the risk of a bear charging in self-defense and can lead to trampling of sensitive habitats.
⚠️ You can’t outrun a bear. Stay in your vehicle, respect wildlife and keep our wild backyard safe for everyone - bears included.
