A bit of a mash-up from the last couple of days.

This is Hiro san, he runs this incredible little izakaya with his mother and younger brother specialized in super fresh sashimi and grilled fish. It was started by his father in the late sixties. And time stood still over here. Nothing has changed. Favourite among the locals from young to old it’s the most joyful place. I have never felt better. We visited this place last year and I made a drawing to honor this very special place and warm host, he is just the best. I called it “Food of the gods” and gave it to him with a kind message. He was just too kind and a pretty surprised. Tadaaaaaa!

Sleeping beauties! If dilapidated buildings are your thing, and damned, they sure have character over here. Then Sakata in the Yamagata region is the place to go!

I have seen a couple a of pagoda’s in the past 17 years, however this one is by far the most intricate I came across. It’s on Mt. Haguro near Tsuruoka town. It’s in plane wood no cosmetics applied the wood work is just insane. And it’s surrounded by these wonderful Tsugi trees. What a setting! But the walk after to the Dewa Sanzan temple complex up the stairs is a grueling 5,2 km. Up front we thought this is easy. But hell no, Ganbatte (がんばって) as the Japanese say. Eat your heart out. What a day!

It’s a rainy day hallelujah, from the outskirts of town to temple pleasures in the heart of Tsuruoka. Hopefully tomorrow to the mountains!
