For many years, I have guided visitors through Venice.
I told stories about the Doges, the merchants, the mighty fleets and the extraordinary maritime empire of La Serenissima.
I thought I knew Venetian history quite well.
Until I discovered how important Methoni was to that story.
Standing on the walls of this magnificent castle, overlooking the endless Greek Blue sea, suddenly becomes clear why Venice fought so hard to control this place. 🌊⚓
For Venice, Methoni was far more than just a castle.
It was one of the most important gateways between Venice and the East.
Together with nearby Koroni, it formed the legendary Occhi della Serenissima — the Eyes of Venice. 👁️🦁
For centuries, ships loaded with spices, silk, wine and olive oil passed Methoni on their way to Crete, Cyprus, Constantinople and the East.
What fascinates me most is that this history is still so visible today.
The Lion of Saint Mark watching over the sea.
The impressive fortifications.
The Bourtzi ( is Tower of San Nicola) rising proudly from the water.
The harbour where sailors, merchants and soldiers once arrived after weeks at sea. 🏰
Every time I visit Methoni Castle, I find myself looking at it differently.
Sometimes I think about the Venetian galleys that once appeared on the horizon.
And sometimes I simply stand there, looking out over the sea, trying to imagine what life must have been like in one of the most important ports of the Venetian world.
That is what makes Methoni so special to me.
This is the story of Methoni — one of the proud Eyes of Venice.

🏖️ Kilometerslange zandstranden, een kristalheldere zee, gezellige beachbars en kleine Griekse badplaatsjes waar het leven nog in een heerlijk rustig tempo wordt geleefd...
Precies tegenover Zakynthos, aan de westkust van de Peloponnesos, ligt een gebied dat nog steeds dat warme, authentieke Griekse gevoel oproept waar zoveel reizigers naar op zoek zijn. Hier wandel je langs eindeloze stranden, drink je een frappé met uitzicht op zee en geniet je van lange zomeravonden die veel te snel voorbijgaan.
In plaatsjes als Arkoudi, Glyfa en Loutra Kyllinis vind je sfeervolle familiehotels, kleinschalige accommodaties, gezellige tavernes aan het strand en leuke beachbars waar je geniet van de zon, de zee en de ontspannen Griekse sfeer. Geen massatoerisme, maar wel volop gezelligheid, comfort en gastvrijheid.
Hier draait het om genieten van de kleine dingen. Een lunch die ongemerkt uren duurt. Een glas wijn bij zonsondergang. Een vriendelijke eigenaar die je na twee dagen bij naam kent. Het geluid van de golven op de achtergrond en het gevoel dat je eindelijk even helemaal tot rust komt.
En misschien wel een van de best bewaarde geheimen van deze regio: de prijzen liggen gemiddeld zo'n 30% lager dan op Zakynthos. Voor eten, drinken en accommodaties betaal je vaak aanzienlijk minder, terwijl je geniet van dezelfde zon, zee en Griekse gastvrijheid.
Een bestemming voor liefhebbers van lange stranden, authentieke dorpjes, heerlijk eten en het échte Griekse vakantiegevoel. 🇬🇷❤️☀️

Nou nou... hier wil je toch gewoon meteen naartoe? 😎💙
Compleet gerenoveerd, een prachtig zwembad, uitzicht op de Grieksblauwe zee én ook nog eens helemaal in mijn kleuren... haha! 😍
Gelegen tussen het sfeervolle Finikounda en het authentieke Methoni, in het zonnige zuiden van de Peloponnesos 🇬🇷☀️
Een plek voor wie houdt van rust, charme, goede restaurants, gezellige terrasjes, eeuwenoude olijfgaarden en natuurlijk die onweerstaanbare Griekse sfeer.

🇬🇷🧿✨ HYDRA – The Magic Begins at Sea ✨🧿🇬🇷
I have visited many beautiful places in Greece over the years, but every time our boat enters the harbour of Hydra, I still get exactly the same feeling. A smile. A little excitement. And a sense of wonder. 💙
That feeling starts long before you arrive. From Ermioni or the small port of Methochi, you leave the mainland behind. 🚤🌊 The sea becomes deeper blue and slowly, on the horizon, Hydra appears.
Then comes the moment.
The moment the boat enters the harbour.
Suddenly there it is. One of the most beautiful harbours in Greece. 🇬🇷✨ Elegant stone houses. Stylish cafés and restaurants. Beautiful boutiques. Fishing boats and yachts gently floating in the harbour. ⛵🍷☀️
And above all... no traffic, no noise, no stress.
Just atmosphere, elegance and the endless geek blue of the sea. 💙🌊
Many of my guests say exactly the same thing when we arrive:
"Wow..." ✨And honestly, I completely understand.
Because Hydra is not famous for big monuments or spectacular attractions. Hydra is special because of the righ vibe.
I love walking through the little streets, enjoying a good lunch by the water, browsing the boutiques and simply watching life go by from a terrace. 🍷☀️🛍️
Perhaps that is the biggest surprise of all. Not how beautiful Hydra is. But how quickly it makes you slow down. How easily it makes you forget the time. And how difficult it is to leave.
Every time the boat departs, I find myself looking back one more time. 🚤💙
Because Hydra is not just an island.
It is a feeling.
