There's nothing quite like finding the real deal when you're trying to imitate it with your flies. Caught this little guy off Gotland, Sweden in November, and it reminded me that sea trout on the coast mainly feed on these crustaceans, much like they go for nymphs in freshwater. And, of course, that’s also when I realized I managed to hook a rock and bend my hook. Guess that's just part of the game!

Björn’s introduction to saltwater fly fishing in Norway was a brief one, which we managed to fit into the evening after I had been guiding another guest all day. However, we were both enthusiastic to scramble around the rugged coastline and get some casts in, with the goal to alleviate Björn’s skepticism that he would catch anything.

After a brief intro to the quirks of the shooting head and some tactics briefing, we moved to a spot where we could easily cast into a vortex full of fish, resulting in plenty of catches. Björn was quite eager to grab one for the pan after disappointing results in the Oslo fjord!

Always good fun shore fishing pike and perch on the 9 wt—this pike was particularly simple-minded and was hanging out literally 2 meters away from my feet and gave me many opportunities to maneuver the fly into his mouth. This pike became our dinner for the night, which I rather enjoy—do you eat pike? 💬

A decidedly unwise day to be tasty— had quite the second day on the coast, even faster-paced than the first! We crossed mackerel off his species list and even foraged some oysters from the rock pools.

I had the privilege of a proper perch smashing my pike fly in Sörmland, Sweden—one that made me feel vindicated in my choice of a 9 WT. I think it goes without saying that he found his way to the pan…

A collection of raw video clips from Henry’s 3rd and final day on the coast with us—we didn’t take many photos on that day, since the fishing was too hot to stop for constant grip and grins. We often get questions about what the saltwater fly fishing is like in Norway, and these videos should give some good insight. The rugged coastline, wind, and crashing waves are both enthralling and liberating, and the pollack action is often fantastic.

That being said, the combination of equipment, species knowledge, location knowledge and tactics would make it difficult for a foreigner, perhaps most accustomed to trout fishing, to succeed on their own. This trip was quite pollack heavy but we typically are catching a fair share of other species like ballan wrasse, cod, cuckoo wrasse, and sea trout!

Day two of three was a slow day- the entire first location we planned for the day was either not producing fish or was inaccessible to cast into because of the tough wind conditions. The spot only ended up producing a kelp covered rock (slide 1) which we had to drag 25 meters across the ocean floor with the 9 weight.

Nevertheless, we changed spots to a stretch of our main guiding location where I knew there would be one bay where we should be able to get into some fish with the wind to our backs. We went there, and it didn’t take long for Henry to start getting into some fish, including a small wrasse who greedily smashed the tungsten jig fly. We decided that for the third day, we would revisit the spots from the first day since it is usually productive with similar wind conditions.

A solid first day of three of guided saltwater fly fishing on the Southern Coast of Norway. After being introduced to using a sinking shooting head and tips on the structure to fish, it didn’t take long for Henry to get into his first fish of the day (slide 2). Towards the afternoon, Henry hooked into his fish of the day (slide 1). The day ended up with 5 fish for Henry as well as 1 accidental mackerel I hooked into while retrieving a demonstration cast.
