Why Svalbard can be warmer than Oslo

1. Warm ocean currents reach Svalbard 🌊
Svalbard is influenced by the West Spitsbergen Current, a branch of the Gulf Stream that carries relatively warm Atlantic water far north.
This keeps the surrounding ocean partially ice-free and raises winter air temperatures, even at 78°N.

Oslo, on the other hand, is inland relative to the open Atlantic and does not get the same direct ocean heat.

2. Oslo often traps cold air in winter ❄️
Oslo sits in a basin surrounded by hills.
In winter, cold dense air sinks and gets trapped near the ground—this is called a temperature inversion.

Norway has unveiled a breathtaking nighttime panoramic train experience designed specifically for viewing the northern lights. Unlike traditional routes, this train features floor-to-ceiling glass windows and transparent ceiling panels, creating an uninterrupted view of the dancing auroras above. The interior lighting is kept extremely dim to preserve night vision, allowing passengers to see even faint auroral activity without interference.

The experience goes beyond sightseeing. The train is powered by renewable energy and integrates real-time solar activity monitoring, giving passengers live updates on geomagnetic conditions as the journey unfolds. Scientists and tourism experts collaborated on the project to ensure that riders not only enjoy the scenery but also understand the natural forces behind the aurora borealis. Adjustable reclining seats tilt upward for comfortable sky gazing, transforming the cabin into a moving observatory.

For travelers, this marks a new chapter in Arctic tourism.
