Gliding through this Unesco World Heritage site with only the sounds of nature around was pure magic.
Grateful for days like this in the heart of Norway’s natural beauty 🇳🇴✨

Tucked into the steep cliffs of Geirangerfjord, the old abandoned fjord farms are more than just scenic — they’re examples in survival and sunlight. ☀️⛰️

Long before roads or power, farmers built their homes and barns where sunlight touched longest. ☀️ The right light, shadow, and positioning weren’t just aesthetic — they meant warmth and life during long winters.

Clinging to rocky ledges, these farms used every sunbeam wisely, often tilted just right to catch the morning light and avoid frost-prone shadows. 🌞🌿

Today, they remind us how deeply connected people once were to nature’s rhythms — and how resourcefulness shaped beauty.

As spring turns into summer, the landscape invites hikers to explore the beautiful nature more and more.

Our hike suggestion this week is the trail to Verpesdalen via Flåna from Kilstivatnet lake.

This intermediate-level hike (blue grading) offers:

🌿 Scenic views: Walk through birch forests, cross gentle streams, and take in breathtaking panoramas where three fjords meet. The trail then descends through a glacier-formed valley the Verpesdalen, where you'll find old and abandoned fjord farms.

📸 Have you hiked this trail, or is it on your list?
Share your experience or your best landscape photos in the comments!

In our fjordsystem, massive rockfalls and rockslides shape the landscape — violent, sudden, and powerful.

Yet from this chaos, life emerges. In the rocky deposits, the Clouded Apollo Butterfly - Parnassius mnemosyne - finds a habitat for overwintering. A fragile, yet powerful symbol of resilience!

Amid danger, life not only returns… it thrives.

Mighty glaciers formed our fjords over millions of years!
During the last Ice Ages, our Geirangerfjord was carved by glaciers into a deep, narrow fjord surrounded by steep, rough mountain walls.

Today, the fjord’s icy blue waters, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic cliffs still bear the marks of that glacial past. Rock falls and landslides remain part of the landscape, a reminder of nature’s ongoing power!

It’s a place where history, geology, and raw beauty come together 🏔️

Ice on Geirangerfjord ❄️

Are our fjords freezing during the winter? In general, the golfstream is the reason why we have ice-free fjords almost all year round. However, from time to time, you will see a thin layer of ice in some parts! Depending on water composition and temperature during this period of time.

Creating these amazing reflections and impressive views!
