Mount Everest isn't just the highest mountain in the world-it's also the world's highest cemetery. Over 330 climbers have died attempting to reach its summit since modern records began in 1921, and around 200 bodies remain frozen on the slopes. Some of these corpses, like the infamous "Green Boots," have served as eerie landmarks for those making the dangerous ascent.
The greatest killer on Everest isn't the terrain-it's the altitude. Above 26,250 feet, the "Death Zone" offers so little oxygen that climbers experience hypoxia, which impairs judgment and can lead to fatal mistakes. Many who die near the summit succumb to exhaustion, exposure, or
"summit fever," the relentless drive to reach the top even as conditions worsen.
Mapping Everest's death toll reveals clear danger zones: the treacherous Khumbu Icefall, the sheer Lhotse Face, and the notorious Hillary Step just before the summit.
Historical data shows that casualties skyrocketed in the 1970s as more climbers attempted the ascent, with deaths now concentrated near the summit. Sherpas, who are better adapted to high altitudes, tend to die at lower elevations, while foreign climbers are more likely to perish near the peak.
Despite Everest's grim reputation, it isn't the deadliest mountain by percentage. Annapurna holds that title, with nearly 30% of expeditions ending in a fatality. Everest, by comparison, has a 14.1% fatality rate-still a sobering statistic for those drawn to its deadly allure.
Would you attempt the climb? Let us know in the comments.
