This year, the Yartung Festival held every year on the occasion of Janai Purnima is scheduled for August 8 to 9 in the majestic region of Mustang. Yartung is a combination of the local tongue - Yar and Tung, meaning โsummerโ and โfarewellโ.
The festival is said to have been celebrated by the early kings of the then-divided states and is continued in the region with horses being an integral part of peopleโs livelihood. Yartung tradition dates back to the first settlements in the region, when locals would celebrate the end of summer months, bringing people from all over the region together for worship, celebrations, horse races and archery competitions.
Not inclusive to the locals, people aged 18 to 60 - including women - from any part of the country or abroad are welcome to participate in the event.
