What if we just got a bigger campervan? Like the Trakkadu?
Good idea but unless we want to pay horrendous import duty that isn't going to happen in the short term. But there is nothing comparable on the market in NZ

We had a fixed idea that until we were ready to commit to full time van life that it was in some vague way not the right thing to have a ‘motorhome’ (aside from the practical issues)
Why not?
It seemed a bit excessive to have a motorhome that would only be in use 25% of the year
Hard to justify.
But … is there really any virtue in making life hard just because it’s only part of the year?
And when exactly does a campervan become a motorhome? Is it defined by the word van?
When it exceeds 6m or 7m?

So …. like in the kids game … bigger than the Cali Ocean but not a fiberglass luton-topped landyacht (apologies to Airstream)

I think we have come full circle since this time last year
A Sprinter/Crafter size van is the only compromise

Well … there are lots of those about ! especially this year as Britz and Maui and Apollo sell off more of their fleet to cope with covid losses.

Sleeping in a California

In theory ... that's as far as it went ... in theory we can sleep 4 adults.
In reality those adults need to be bit smaller and a lot more flexible and agile than we have become 😔

We have, at least until we can get another Trakkadu, conceded defeat

So ... what next?

It's complicated ... covid makes everything more complicated ... but there is a plan emerging

I wrote this after a couple of hilarious encounters with card carrying members of the Them and Us club
* * * * * * * * * *
I was sitting in my camper van one bright and windy day
When a caravan pulled in and I heard a woman say
I know its shady and its flat but really it wont do
Cant park beside a rig like that, you really have no clue
What if they're into rock and roll and other stuff like drugs
Or maybe hippie stuff like oms, free love and lots of hugs
Just for a minute there I saw, in his his eyes a light
But then he gave a sorry shrug and said Yes dear You're right
Three times around the park they went, this was the only shade
Can we get our money back if we've already paid?
Theres nowhere else to go he says and it's getting late
Just close the blinds, we'll lock the doors, it cant be that bad mate
Seven tries it took to get the 'van into that spot
And all that time their furry friends were in that car so hot
Free at last they bounded out with joyous barks and wagging
But mother took them to the tent lawn and didnt bother bagging
Awnings fridges chairs and mats we wondered at the sight
They havent missed a single thing but gosh it cant be light.
Later in the evening, back from the laundry walking
A lady fell in next to me, set to do some talking
She told me all about their trip, about their mighty rig
It's hard to find a parking place, the fuel bill's too big
She's got all the bells and whistles, and yes she's rightly proud
They've worked hard for this and earned it, not like that 'other' crowd
I grinned in glee and asked What sort? Whatever do you mean?
Backpackers hippies and their kind,
They cant be very clean
Just have a look around she said, at all those little vans
They arent like us you surely know, in thirty foot tin cans
I'm pretty sure you're right on that, we arent the same I said
As I turned off to my wee van her face turned very red
I gave her dogs a cuddle and said good night politely
With luck the lesson will be learned and not taken lightly
