The Pouakai Tarn Walk is one of Taranaki’s most iconic short hikes, famous for its mirror-like reflection of Mount Taranaki on calm days.

Here’s a quick guide:

📍 Location:
Egmont National Park, near New Plymouth, North Island, New Zealand.

🚶 Walk details:

Distance: 11.73 km out and back (from Mangorei Road end) and 700 m elevation gain.
Time: 5–6 hours return (longer if you take it slow or stop for photos).
Track type: Steep but well-formed boardwalks and steps through lush forest, leading to the open alpine tussock where the tarn sits.

✨ Highlights:

The Pouakai Tarn reflection of Mount Taranaki (best at sunrise or sunset, and on a still day).
Subalpine landscapes, tussock fields, and sweeping views across the Taranaki region.
A chance to see native birds like tūī, kererū, and pīwakawaka.

🏡 Nearby hut:

Pouakai Hut (20-bunk) is about 45 minutes past the tarn. A great option if you want to stay overnight for sunrise/sunset photography.

🥾 Tips:

Go on a clear, calm day for the iconic reflection shot.
Take warm layers – the weather changes quickly in the alpine zone.
A head torch is handy if you plan for sunrise/sunset, as you’ll likely hike in the dark for part of the journey.

Lake Tekapo view from a different Angle - from Mt John.

⛰ Mt John is a little hill just outside Lake Tekapo and it gives a fantastic Birds Eye view of the entire Lake area as far as Mt Cook on a sunny day.

New Zealand’s flora and fauna are unique and incredibly diverse due to the country’s long isolation and varied landscapes. Here’s some pictures from Henry’s Scenic Reserve Waterfall — also known as the Whangamaire Stream Waterfall — is a charming cascade nestled in South Auckland near Patumāhoe, about 10 minutes from Pukekohe.

Hoar frost in Twizel (and the greater Mackenzie Basin) is a stunning and surprisingly frequent winter spectacle—both visually and meteorologically.

❄️ What is hoar frost and why Twizel?
Formation: When the air temperature dips below freezing and there’s moisture—think fog or mist—water v***r deposits directly onto surfaces as feathery ice crystals, creating that signature sparkling, lace-like layer.

🌌Why here: Twizel sits in a calm inland basin ideal for radiational cooling. Winter nights are long, often clear and still, allowing fog to settle and generate repeated hoar frost in successive mornings .

🌡️ How cold does it get?
Overnight lows in winter routinely dip to –6°C to –11°C, with record lows below –12°C—one particularly harsh morning reached –19.8°C at nearby Pukaki Airport.

Ground frost thresholds:
Slight: –1 °C to –3 °C
Moderate: –3 to –6 °C
Severe: –6 to –9 °C
Very severe: below –9 °C

Twizel frequently experiences "severe" or "very severe" frost during such events.
