You go to Edinburgh Fringe for one show.

Then somehow it’s midnight, you’re squeezed into a tiny downstairs venue with strangers, someone’s ordered chips, and you’re debating whether you still have energy for “just one more drink”.

And honestly? That’s kind of the magic of Fringe. 🎭🍻

It’s not just theatre. It’s atmosphere. Music drifting through the streets. Packed pubs. Random conversations. Tiny shows you never planned to see becoming the highlight of the trip.

This month’s Destination of the Month is Festival Season - and Edinburgh Fringe might just be the most chaotic, brilliant example of all of it.

Most people think Edinburgh Fringe is about theatre.

In reality, it’s often about everything happening around it.

You head out for one show and suddenly the entire city seems to take over your night. Street musicians on corners. Packed pubs spilling onto cobbled laneways. Tiny underground performances you never planned to see. Conversations with complete strangers that somehow become part of the memory too.

That’s what makes Fringe so different. It feels less like attending an event and more like stepping into a city-wide atmosphere where everyone’s part of it somehow.

This month’s Destination of the Month is Festival Season, exploring the destinations that feel completely different during major events and celebrations around the world.

Twenty years ago, I made a decision that seemed fairly ordinary at the time.

Looking back, it shaped far more of my life than I ever could have imagined.

This week's Travel Notes with Trish isn't really about travel at all. It's about hindsight, the unexpected turns life takes, and how some of the decisions that change everything rarely feel important in the moment.

Have you ever looked back and realised one small decision led to a completely different life?

Twenty-two years ago, I accepted a job at Soul Bar without giving it much thought. Looking back, it became one of the most important decisions I've ever made. Funny how life works sometimes.

If you come home from Rio Carnival with a missing voice, mysterious glitter in your suitcase, 47 new best friends and absolutely no regrets… then honestly, you probably did it right 🎭😂

Rio Carnival isn’t one-size-fits-all… and neither are the hotels. 🎭✨

Where you stay can completely change the experience - from glamorous beachfront energy to local culture, rooftop cocktails, understated luxury or escaping the chaos entirely.

These are 5 Rio stays I’d recommend for very different Carnival experiences:

📍 Copacabana Palace – Copacabana
For the iconic first-time Rio experience. Historic glamour, beachfront atmosphere and classic Carnival energy right on your doorstep.

📍 Hotel Santa Teresa RJ MGallery – Santa Teresa
For travellers wanting a more soulful side of Rio. Boutique, artistic and full of character, this area feels far more local than the beachfront districts.

📍 Janeiro Hotel – Leblon
Stylish understated luxury in one of Rio’s most sophisticated neighbourhoods. Think quiet luxury, beautiful design and a calmer beach vibe.

📍 Vila Galé Rio de Janeiro – Lapa
For people who want Carnival to feel loud, social and full of energy. Samba bars, nightlife and late nights start right outside the hotel.

📍 La Suite by Dussol – Joá
For escaping the chaos after the madness of Carnival. Private villa energy, dramatic ocean views and one of the most exclusive-feeling stays in Rio.

Because the truth is…
Rio Carnival isn’t the same for everyone. And that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable.

Which one feels most like your kind of Rio? 👀

Most people think Rio Carnival is all about the parade.
But honestly? That’s only part of it. 🎭✨

It’s the music echoing through the streets.
The energy that takes over the entire city.
The costumes that feel more like art than outfits.
The electric atmosphere long after midnight.
And the culture woven through every part of it.

Rio doesn’t just host Carnival.
For a few days, it completely becomes it.

Some destinations don’t just look different during festival season… they feel different too 🎭✨

The streets stay louder later. Music spills out into public squares. Conversations last longer. Entire cities seem to shift personality for a few days.

There’s something pretty special about friends who live on opposite sides of the world choosing to meet somewhere neither of them calls home ✈️🌎

One friend lives in the UK. One lives in New Zealand. Last time it was Malaysia. This time, Cancun.
Different countries. Different lives. Same holiday tradition.

Well… after the small matter of accidentally bringing the wrong passport to the airport 😳😂

Yep. One very frantic 40-minute dash home later, the correct passport was retrieved, stress levels were sky-high, and the holiday was officially underway.

Thankfully, once they arrived at Club Med Cancun, everything became easy. Which is exactly why they love the Club Med style of holidaying.

✔️ Big comfortable rooms
✔️ Fantastic staff
✔️ Great entertainment
✔️ Everything included
✔️ Endless things to do for both adults and kids

(And thank goodness for the boutique assistant who stopped a very accidental NZ$650 board short purchase 😳😂)

Ruby loved the onsite water park, while the adults threw themselves into fitness classes, Latin dancing lessons, and even a pickleball tournament with 100+ participants 🏓💃

And one of my favourite parts of the story? The French couple they met during their last Club Med holiday in Malaysia joined them again in Cancun this time ❤️

That’s the thing about travel. Sometimes you come home with more than just photos.

Safe to say this won’t be their last Club Med holiday either… the Bahamas are already calling for the next one 👀☀️
