The Ghan may be famous for crossing Australia’s vast interior - but the view from the window is only part of the story.

Aboard the four-day Ghan Expedition from Darwin to Adelaide, you’ll dine on regionally inspired food, enjoy Australian wines and wake each morning somewhere entirely different.

Then you step off the train.

Cruise through Nitmiluk Gorge near Katherine, explore Alice Springs, dine beneath the desert stars and venture underground in Coober Pedy. By the time you reach Adelaide, the train hasn’t merely taken you somewhere - it has become one of the stories you’ll keep telling.

And no, you don’t need to be a train enthusiast. You only need to appreciate a remarkable way of experiencing Australia. 🚂

Would The Ghan earn a place on your travel list?

There are many excellent reasons to see Australia by rail. This is certainly one of them. 😂🥂

There isn’t one “best” Australian rail journey. The right one depends on which version of Australia you want to experience.

🚂 The Ghan - for the Red Centre, ancient landscapes and immersive days in Katherine, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy.

🚂 Indian Pacific - for anyone who wants to feel the true scale of Australia, from the Blue Mountains to the vast Nullarbor.

🚂 Great Southern - for a summer journey shaped by coastlines, cities, regional food and a decent glass of wine.

🚂 Spirit of Queensland - for a completely different overnight rail experience, travelling from Brisbane to Cairns in a lie-flat RailBed.

Four trains. Four very different holidays.

Which one has your name on it?

History, culture and a little spice 🌶️

This fortnight’s newsletter takes us from Turkey’s ancient cities, striking landscapes and moving Gallipoli history to Sri Lanka’s wildlife, tea country and seriously good food - including an authentic prawn curry recipe to try at home.

There are also some tempting earlybird offers beginning to appear for the UK, Europe and Asia.

Think you’ve “done” Australia? A weekend in Sydney, family in Melbourne and a trip to the Gold Coast barely scratch the surface.

September’s Destination of the Month is Australia by Rail, and my new blog explores four very different ways to experience it:

🚂 The Ghan through the Red Centre
🚂 Indian Pacific across the continent
🚂 Great Southern through the food-and-wine regions of the south
🚂 Spirit of Queensland towards the tropical north

It’s not simply about where the trains go. It’s the onboard dining, off-train experiences and thoughtfully chosen stays that turn each journey into a much bigger Australian holiday.

Wildlife doesn’t check your itinerary.

Whales, bears, moose and bald eagles are commonly spotted across Alaska and the Canadian Rockies, but sightings are never guaranteed.

That’s why I recommend an itinerary that gives you several opportunities to look - from the Rocky Mountaineer, your Alaska cruise and well-chosen excursions on land.

And sometimes, after all that careful planning… you get goats. 🐐😂

Sometimes the best travel photos are the ones you never planned. 🐋😂

I don't think this whale got the memo that it wasn't supposed to be in the picture... but I can't say I'm disappointed!

It's a good reminder that some of the most memorable moments in Alaska happen completely by chance. Whether it's a whale surfacing beside the boat, a bald eagle soaring overhead or a curious sea otter drifting past, you never quite know what nature has in store.

A recent 36 hours in Auckland was time very well spent - learning, upskilling, reconnecting with my Wanderlust whānau and making valuable new connections.

Two destinations. Two very different days of learning. And a notebook now bursting with ideas.

First up was the JNTO Japan Roadshow, where I met with representatives from hotels, rail companies, luggage delivery services, tour operators and attractions.

A few particularly useful discoveries:

🚄 You can hire an entire car on the Shinkansen and theme it for your group. Now that could make for one very memorable train journey!

🧳 Japan’s luggage delivery services can move your bags between destinations, saving you from wrestling suitcases through busy stations.

🏨 JR Central Hotels provided a brilliantly practical guide showing exactly how close each hotel is to the nearest station. It’s a small detail that can make a very big difference when planning a smooth itinerary.

The following day was the Tourism Fiji Roadshow - and what a day it was! We met suppliers “speed-dating style”, with ten minutes at each table in small groups. Fast-paced, focused and an excellent way to have proper conversations.

From newly refurbished Beachcomber Island and Shangri-La’s rather tempting Dusk to Dawn spa package, to Malolo, Likuliku, Castaway Island, Musket Cove, Matamanoa, Sofitel and the utterly gorgeous Savasi Island… there was plenty to get excited about.

These days aren’t simply about collecting brochures. They give me direct contacts with the people who can help when a client needs a favour, a waiver or perhaps a thoughtful little extra. That personal connection can be invaluable when it matters.

A huge vinaka to Tourism Fiji and every supplier involved for such a fabulous, well-organised day. We were exceptionally well looked after from morning tea right through to the final drinks and canapés - and I even came home with a gorgeous Pure Fiji gift pack. Networking is tough, but someone has to do it. 😄

A Canadian Rockies & Alaska holiday is a big investment, so it's worth getting the planning right from the very beginning.

Here are the five mistakes I see most often:

🚂 Trying to squeeze everything into 10 days
This isn't a holiday to rush. Between the Rockies, Rocky Mountaineer, Vancouver and an Alaska cruise, I'd usually recommend allowing around 2–3 weeks. You'll spend less time packing, unpacking and travelling, and more time actually enjoying the experience.

🛳️ Booking the cruise before planning the whole itinerary
It's tempting to start with the cruise, but I always recommend planning the entire journey first. That way, your flights, train journey, hotels and cruise all work together seamlessly, rather than trying to fit the pieces together afterwards.

🏔️ Choosing Eastbound or Westbound for the scenery
The scenery is spectacular whichever direction you travel. The real decision is how you want your holiday to unfold, especially if you're combining it with an Alaska cruise.

🐋 Spending your entire budget before you even arrive
Don't forget to allow for those unforgettable experiences, whether it's a helicopter glacier landing, the White Pass Railway, dog mushing or a wildlife excursion. They're often the moments people remember most.

📅 Waiting too long to book
Rocky Mountaineer's GoldLeaf service and the most sought-after cruise cabins can book out well in advance. Booking early isn't just about securing a price - it's about having the best choice.

If you're thinking about combining the Canadian Rockies with an Alaska cruise, I've put together itinerary ideas, planning inspiration and current offers here:
