〜Recent updates〜
Last month Roots Land Community had our first mahi working with a group of international students from Germany visiting Okopako Lodge in Whirinaki. It was awesome to have Matua Charlie Waata, who has supported the starting of this kaupapa, guide us on a hikoi (walk) and to hear his kōrero (talk) about the maunga (mountains). The students also participated in weaving, making fried bread and other activities.

I (Eliska) did a presentation encouraging students to reflect on their experiences in Aotearoa, cross-cultural exchanges, and applying them to environmental issues in their home country. We then used natural objects to represent how we related humans to the rest of nature, bringing up the question of whether we belong to the land, or whether the land belongs to us.
Finally we tested out this question through intuitive communication, splitting into groups and directly asking Nature how modern Humans fit into the ecosystem. We also compared this to Ancestors. All 3 groups found that Ancestors had a better relationship with Nature than modern humans, highlighting the importance of reconnecting to our own ancestry in order to reconnect with Nature.

Additionally, a few days ago I held a 2.5h workshop on intuitive communication and how to consciously connect with Nature such as land, plants, and more. Thank you to those who attended and for your positive feedback. You can now find us on Google maps and see the reviews we have received. https://maps.app.goo.gl/t9jMTJqxVaEtvSEd8

Details for those attending the workshop this Sunday 17th May:

Location: 30 Waiotemarama Gorge Rd - you will drive past the back entrance to Pakanae Marae, keep going and it's the next steep drive to the right, with a big "30" on a sign in front. At the top there are 3 houses, take the drive to the farthest right.
Please note there are dogs that bark - mostly small dogs and none of them are aggressive, but if anyone has a problem with dogs let me know, I can ask the owner to lock them up for the duration

Other:
- please pay in cash
- bring some kai to share during tea break (doesn't have to be big as it won't be a full on meal)
- a warm jacket is a good idea as the workshop space can get cold, otherwise we will be outside in the garden
- any patai/questions let me know :)

See you then!

What is intuitive communication?
Intuitive communication was used regularly by our ancestors, such as for hunting or finding edible or medicinal plants. This ability is within all people, but colonisation and modern systems have disconnected us from it. This introductory workshop explores exercises to reconnect to our intuition and communicate with non-human beings in a safe and ethical space.

Foraging seaweeds in New Zealand

One of the things we are passionate about at Roots Land Community is getting people actively involved in community gardens, highlighting the importance of food resilience.

However gardening isn't the only way to live sustainably off your local whenua (land).
Foraging, while respecting local tikanga (customs) and taking only what we need, is another cool way to live while staying connected to nature in your region.

So recently I'm exploring edible plants and seaweeds in our rohe Hokianga. If anyone is interested in this or has knowledge they're willing to share please reach out.

Thanks to and users for the info

After years working as a wildlife conservationist,
Roots Land Community founder now helps people interact with Nature in a different light.

His life-changing encounters tracking wild bears in Japan, and ancestral calling as a traditional healer-shaman, led to him embracing old ways of listening and working in tune with Nature that modern humans have been disconnected from.

The goal of Roots Land Community workshops & ecotours is to reconnect people to those ways in a way that is authentic to them: through their own ancestors.
At the same time we learn how to connect to Nature and culture in different places in a way that is ethical, respectful, and unites us as One while celebrating our differences.

Global Reconnection Through Intuitive Communication Workshop

Last minute decided to host a trial workshop at the Northern Burn camping event this weekend.
9 people total attended and despite the limited time of an hour or so, we got some really positive feedback, especially on the exercise connecting to ancestral lands.

For some it was empowering, feeling the land's response to their love for it and receiving confirmation of the strength of their connection.
Others became conscious of blocks standing in the way that might have nothing to do with them. And some were able to release some of the pain of physical separation from those places.

It was confirmation again of the need for people to connect to nature through their ancestors, not simply as individuals, in order to truly feel the interconnections between all things.

Thankful for this opportunity and the little patch of whenua under this poplar tree which made for a cool outdoor space.
Looking forward to rehashing some of these exercises and hosting the German students coming to Hokianga at the end of this month.

(Of course I forgot to take photos during..!)

"No matter your cultural background, everyone has ancestors who knew nature intimately and knew how to coexist with it."
Nowadays most of us are disconnected from our ancestry, and there is an odd sense of discomfort in that. So instead we look to other cultures or scientific models to find the answers to coexist with nature.

While learning from outside sources is important and helpful, imagine how much easier it would be if you could feel on an embodied level that "coexistence with nature" is within you already, and always has been. This is everyone's birthright, passed on from their ancestors.

Roots Land Community workshops facilitate an experience of ancestral, nature and cultural connection. We then hold an ethical space to discuss how these connections can help us tackle global social and environmental issues today. These workshops are open to people around the world and are based in Hokianga, New Zealand.

Whether it's through wildlife encounters, forest bathing, gardening or other, once you experience how closely connected you are to other parts of nature for yourself, with your own senses,
Humans being a part of nature no longer becomes a question or a debate we have to convince people of.
Instead we ask, how can we remain conscious of this connection and nurture it in our day-to-day lives, so that we can live healthier and look after our planet, ourselves and each other?

Roots Land Community workshops facilitate an experience of nature connection and hold an ethical space for these discussions to take place, open to people around the world and based in Hokianga, New Zealand.

Through these workshops we aim to tackle the sense of disconnections at the root of social and environmental problems worldwide.
