We’ve had an incredible afternoon at the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Southern South Island Ladies' Long Lunch today. A fantastic event dedicated to inspiring rural women and bringing together farming ladies from across the South Island.

Highlights include: Keynote speaker, Gemma McCaw’s powerful insights on building confidence to take on challenges in the great outdoors. And the Rural Women NZ panel with Gillian Swinton, Stevie Cockburn (Like Grandma Did)'s and Alesha Tomasi on the future of homesteading and how they’ve blended innovation and tradition.

Huge thanks to Beef + Lamb New Zealand for bringing us all together with of course great food, great wine and even better company.

We get it - finding balance between running a business, raising kids and keeping the farm moving is no small feat. That’s why it was such a pleasure to be at the recent Christchurch ANZCO Foods conference, where the theme ‘finding the balance’ really struck a chord.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It was even better to meet, in person, some of the amazing women who’ve been quietly inspiring our Hammond Davidson team for years. From Phillipa Cameron of What's For Smoko , whose family recipes are as ridiculously moreish (and yes, Kylie was lucky enough to win her raffle prize!), to Kate Ivey - Fitness, Health and Inspiration and fitness programmes that fit around real life and of course the ever-inspiringNadia Lim a true NZ icon who brings a whole lot of heart to everything she does.⁣⁣

If you’re also looking to add a little balance to your busy life, these ladies are a pretty great place to start.

📢 The New Zealand Government has unveiled a new tax initiative designed to support business investment and boost economic growth - and it’s a game-changer for anyone planning to purchase new assets.⁣
⁣
Here’s a quick summary of what’s on offer:⁣
⁣
From 22 May 2025, businesses can immediately deduct 20% of the cost of new depreciable assets (excluding GST) from their taxable income - in addition to standard depreciation.⁣
⁣
Applies to: Most new assets like work vehicles, tools, machinery and even commercial or industrial buildings (which normally don’t depreciate).⁣
⁣
Excludes: Second-hand assets, land, trading stock, residential buildings, software licences and items already fully expensed under other rules.⁣
⁣

Getting out of the office to share our financial know-how with the rural sector always gets our team buzzing.⁣

Kylie and Emma had the privilege of being invited by Beef + Lamb New Zealand Southern South Island to facilitate a workshop in Gore with a group of go ahead farmers. The theme of this focus day was "Understanding Farm Financial Statements". ⁣
⁣
It was a fantastic session, with participants leaving equipped with new skills and tools to better understand financial metrics and to do a high level analysis of any opportunities that come their way.⁣

As May wraps up, it’s not just the end of the financial year for dairy, it’s also a time of big moves across the sector. Many farmers are packing up the ute, shifting farms and stepping into new opportunities. And with the milk price on the rise, there’s plenty to feel positive about.⁣
