What if getting lost was the best part of your holiday? 🇱🇦

We hired our own scooters and headed out into Vang Vieng — gravel roads, dirt tracks, lagoons, spectacular scenery and absolutely no need to know exactly where we were going. Along the way we met locals, stopped for a chat, explored at our own pace, and had the kind of encounters you simply can’t schedule.

Then came the unforgettable experience of feeding, washing and interacting with rescued elephants, before continuing on to the beautiful temples, food and riverside charm of Luang Prabang.

This is how I like to travel — less ticking boxes, more getting amongst it.

Basra sits on the Shatt al-Arab, the mighty waterway formed by the meeting of the Tigris and Euphrates before they eventually flow towards the Gulf.

Historically, Basra was a major trading hub and was once criss-crossed by canals — earning it the rather romantic nickname “Venice of the East.” It’s also famous for its date palms and has been an important port for centuries.

But naturally, I decided the best way to appreciate all this history was to climb onto a ferris wheel on the waterfront. 🎡

Now, I could have simply enjoyed the view.

Instead, I made the questionable decision to get inside one of the little cabins…

…and was immediately treated to the soundtrack of metal clinking, machinery clunking and things going “zzzzzip” somewhere inside the structure.

At this point, I found myself wondering whether this was:
A) a perfectly normal ferris wheel
B) an extremely Iraqi ferris wheel
or
C) the beginning of a very interesting insurance claim. 😂

And below us was the Shatt al-Arab, with Saddam Hussein’s former yacht sitting on the river.

Yes. That Saddam Hussein.

The yacht eventually found a rather unexpected second life as a research vessel for the University of Basra.

So there I was…

Above the river, on a ferris wheel that sounded increasingly unhappy with its life choices, looking down at Saddam’s old yacht, while contemplating some of my own.

Just 11 years old… and already speaking the language of the wild. 🦅🐎

In the Altai Mountains of Mongolia, this young lad is training to become an Eagle Master.

His best mate? His horse. 🐎
His partner in training? His falcon. 🦅

That evening drum session hits different. 🥁✨ Nothing compares to the energy of Haeinsa at dusk. So grateful to for this experience—from the rhythmic chants to the incredible chance to chat one-on-one with a monk. A truly memorable evening. 🏮🙏

Lately, I’ve been deep in the world of European flight paths for my clients, but I couldn't help but feel inspired by my own trip to South Korea a couple of years ago. People queue early for this savory beef-broth soup, a tradition with a long history of serving local merchants and laborers.

What springs to mind when you hear the word "Iraq"? 🌍

Most people tell me: "It’s dangerous." "It's war-torn." "I'd never travel there."

Swipe through these photos, and you will see a completely different reality. 📸

I recently returned from exploring this incredible country, and the faces in these images represent some of the most hospitable, welcoming, and genuinely curious people on the planet.✨

The stories behind these photos:

Baghdad: Meeting the hilarious hotel cleaner —we bonded over tattoos (ask me about her story sometime, it's wild!).

The Streets: The young sisters who paused their day just to spend time with us, and the passionate food vendors eager to share their treats.

The Mosques: The warm, welcoming women who invited us into their sacred spaces.

Kurdistan: The proud Kurds in Northern Iraq who generously shared their history, culture, and deep love for their people.

Not once did I feel unsafe. Far from it—I felt entirely looked after and welcomed with open arms.

This is exactly why I travel: to look past the headlines, break stereotypes, and experience the world with total clarity.
