Had a Saturday night call out a few weekends ago, unfortunately the client had some issues... After a safety disconnect from Wellington Electricity, we quickly removed the old mains entry box, cleared up the damaged cabling and fitted a new PDL mains entry box ready to be livened.

DANGER ! ! !

NOTE TO ALL, whether you are a homeowner, tenant, trades-person or anyone looking to come in contact with this product.

This type of foil insulation is extremely dangerous where an electrical installation is present. Typically in residential housing installation but not limited to.
The issue with this type of insulation may be the result of poor workmanship during installation but unfortunately the result is the same. This stuff is dangerous and should be removed. Here's an example as to why.

A few weeks back we had a job in Lower Hutt shuffling some electrical cabling under the house for some power points. Upon further investigation tracking the electrical cabling under the house, we noticed the burn mark on the foil insulation. The electrical cabling had been stapled and the foil had obviously become live (see burn mark on foil), had someone touched it, this could be fatal.
The really scary thing was not only had the owner informed me that he and his son were crawling around under the house a week prior, but there was also a galvanised gas pipe running through and touching the foil insulation. The mind wonders what could have gone wrong if the foil had sparked a hole in the gas line.

PLEASE take the time to contact your local electrician or us here at The Trade Bureau Ltd if you have this foil Insulation surrounding your electrical installation.

A few simple steps taken now could prevent you or anyone who is accessing under the house from getting an electric shock or worse.... being killed.

Further information surrounding the ban of this insulation can be found at the below link.

Winters coming.

Are you thinking about keeping yourselves and your family warm and cosy?? Looking to insulate the ceiling of your home this year??

Here’s a tip regarding insulation and recessed lighting.

Before installing any insulation around your downlights. You need to firstly check the downlight’s CA rating.

Attached is a photo that shows the 5 categories for CA ratings.
To check what ratings your downlight’s have, contact our team or there should be a sticker on the top of the downlight’s (seen from above inside the roof space). This rating will show you how close your insulation can be to that downlight.

A lot of the old downlight’s won’t have a CA rating and all insulation will need to be kept well clear of those downlight's. Keeping insulation away will cause gaps in your insulation, this will let heat escape, but having insulation too close to a downlight (that does not have a CA rating) will cause the light fitting to create a lot more heat. This increased heat could cause a fire.

Here at The Trade Bureau, we can replace any old downlight’s with modern energy saving, long life, LED options.

LED options that allow insulation to be abutted next to them and also some fittings which allow insulation to cover them completely, which would mean no gaps in your insulation.

LED's are available in different colour's, brightness levels, dimming/non-dimming, tilting/non-tilting, even waterproof options to suit your home, just contact our team.
