The question we never get asked..."What shouldn't I do while I'm here?"

Interesting question.

Our answer? A lot.

Don't try to do everything.

Central Otago isn't a destination that rewards rushing.

The best days often involve fewer stops, longer conversations, a great lunch and enough time to actually enjoy the landscape.

Sometimes travellers arrive with a checklist.

They leave remembering the unexpected moments instead.

The view they weren't expecting.
The winery they hadn't heard of.
The story behind a vineyard.
The pie from a local café.

That's usually where the magic happens.

If you're keen to know more about how we help clients experience Central Otago the local way, get in touch.

One thing we've noticed working with both travellers and travel advisors:

People often have questions they think they "should already know."

How many wineries can you realistically visit?
What's worth doing if someone doesn't drink wine?
Is Clyde worth stopping in?
How much driving is actually involved?
Can you do Central Otago in a day?

The answer is usually: it depends.
And that's okay.

We'd much rather have a conversation than sell someone the wrong experience.

The feedback we hear most often from agents and guests is that we're easy to deal with.

That's probably because we're not trying to fit people into a template.

We're an open book.

Ask us anything.

There's a good chance someone else was wondering the same thing.

And if you're still feeling shy, we've added all our most commonly asked questions to our website right here: https://www.obelisktours.co.nz/frequently-asked-questions

What's the cheapest way to see Central Otago?

It's a fair question.

And we'll answer it honestly.

The cheapest way is probably to drive yourself.
Or hop on the cheapest bus tour you can find.

But the best value?

That's a different conversation.

Our guests often tell us the biggest benefit isn't the transport.

It's having someone local who knows which winery is worth the stop, which road has the best views, where to find lunch, which cellar doors require appointments and how to make the most of a limited amount of time.

You can spend less.

Or you can spend your day experiencing more.

That's where local knowledge becomes surprisingly valuable.

We've piled together our most common FAQ's for you guys to check out:

The wine tour question nobody wants to ask 🍷

Let's be honest.

One of the most common questions we get isn't about wine at all.

It's:
"Do I have to know anything about wine?"

Absolutely not.

You don't need to know your Pinot Noir from your Pinot Gris.
You don't need to swirl dramatically.
You don't need to describe aromas of "wet river stones" or "forest floor".

Central Otago wine tours are some of the most relaxed you'll find.

If you want to go in-depth with the winemakers, you can.
If you'd rather sit back, chat and enjoy the views, that's perfectly fine too.

You just need to enjoy discovering new places and trying something different.

Some guests arrive with wine qualifications.
Others arrive saying, "I usually just pick the label I like."

Both have a great day.

The best wine tour is the one where you relax, ask questions and enjoy yourself.

No wine exam required.

P.s... our 10% locals discount is still valid for all bookings made before the end of July.

A Little Thank You to the Locals of Central Otago

One of the things I love most about running Obelisk Tours is working alongside the incredible people and businesses that make this region such a special place to live.

From wineries and accommodation providers to bike companies, cafés, restaurants, farmers and everyone else who helps keep our communities ticking along — thank you.

To show our appreciation, we're offering a 10% Locals Discount on all Obelisk Tours private experiences throughout June, July & August.

Plus, we'll throw in a few special treats for the journey too. 😊

The best part? Every experience is completely private and bespoke.

🍷 Always wanted to spend an afternoon exploring Bannockburn's vineyards but nobody wants to be the designated driver?

🔥 Fancy a long lunch by the fire at Carrick with friends without worrying about getting there and back?

🏔 Keen to venture into the Central Otago hills and backcountry but would rather leave the driving to someone else?

🐑 Or perhaps you'd like to visit some of our local farms and meet a few famous fluffy locals along the way?

Whatever your idea of a great winter day out looks like, I'd love to help make it happen.

Send me a message, or visit www.obelisktours.co.nz or email [email protected] and let's plan your Central Otago winter adventure.

Cheers,

Lauren

What Should I Wear On A Wine Tour?

Note: This might be painfully obvious to locals but often isn't to visitors.

A surprisingly common question.

And a very good one.

The answer?

Probably leave the stilettos at home... 😉

🧥We always recommend comfortable shoes and layers.
🥾Not because we're hiking mountains (unless you want to), but because wineries, cellar doors and vineyards involve more wandering than people expect.
🏔The best views are often from out on the grass.

AND
😎Central Otago weather also likes to keep things interesting.

You might experience frost, sunshine, wind and blue skies all in the same day.

Layers are your friend.

Formal attire is not required unless you fancy it...

Nobody has ever been turned away from a cellar door for wearing a puffer jacket.

If in doubt, dress comfortably and we'll handle the rest.

One of the questions I'm asked most often is:
"What's your most popular tour?"

The truth is, there isn't one.

Because no two groups are the same.

Some guests are passionate about wine.

Others want to meet local farmers.

Some are history enthusiasts.

Others simply want spectacular scenery and great food.

That's why I love creating bespoke itineraries.

The best day isn't the one that's most popular.

It's the one that's designed specifically for you.

Travel should feel personal.

After all, that's what makes it memorable.

✈️ Escaping This Winter? Let Us Take Care of the Drive.

Early morning flights. Icy roads. Finding a park. Waiting for a shuttle bus.

Or...

A warm, comfortable private vehicle arrives at your door, helps with the luggage, and drops you directly at the airport terminal.

Easy.

Transport is a huge part of what we do at Obelisk Tours. While many people know us for wine tours and bespoke experiences, we're also helping locals and visitors get where they need to go safely and comfortably throughout winter.

Whether you're heading away for a weekend, a family holiday, a ski trip, or returning home after a long flight, we offer reliable door-to-door private transfers throughout Central Otago, Wānaka and Queenstown.

No park and ride.
No icy early-morning drive.
No asking favours from friends.

Just professional, friendly service from me (Lauren) and our team of trusted local drivers.

Winter travel doesn't need to be stressful.

Get in touch to book your private transfer and start your trip the easy way.

PLUS - we're offering locals 10% for bookings made in June and July.

I recently met Lucie from . One thing that surprises many visitors to Central Otago is how different each sub-region can be.

A Pinot Noir from Bannockburn can tell a very different story to one from Bendigo, Gibbston or Alexandra.

Same grape.

Completely different expression.

That's part of what makes this region so special.

When I host wine tours, I often encourage guests to slow down and pay attention to the stories behind the wines—the landscape, the climate, the people and the history.

Because great wine isn't just about what's in the glass.

It's about understanding where it came from.

And Central Otago has some incredible stories to tell.

Bored of Winter Yet?

Life's too short to spend winter doing the same thing every weekend.

Consider this your antidote.

Which of these have you always wanted to do but never got around to it?

🍷 A long lunch at a Bannockburn winery.
🔥 A cosy afternoon by the fire at Carrick.
🍾 How about a winery you've never even heard of? We've got them!
🏔 A backcountry adventure into the Central Otago hills.
🏠 How about a look inside our latest Grand Designs-featured home?
👉 Or something completely different.

At Obelisk Tours, we know it's hard even for locals to get out and explore.

You need a sober driver - to think it through - to plan - and to book because you don't know where is open in the winter. That's where we make it easy.

Every experience is private and bespoke, so if you've got an idea (or no idea at all), I'll help create a day out worth getting excited about.

As a little thank you to our local community, we're offering 10% off all private experiences booked during June and July.

Available to residents of:
📍 Central Otago
📍 Alexandra
📍 Cromwell
📍 Bannockburn
📍 Queenstown
📍 Wānaka

Starts now and is subject to availability.
