MV Pembroke had her maiden voyage as a tourism vessel in December 1962 in Milford Sound, she was built by the government owned Tourism Hotel Corporation to run day trips in Milford Sound.
Not long after the maiden voyage the skipper put her nose under the Stirling Falls, he misjudged the distance and the whole bow went underwater, luckily the force of the waterfall pushed the boat out of the stream of water and once the props and rudder were back in the water, control was regained. Afterwards some of the 92 passengers onboard commented they thought the experience was 'fun'. Meanwhile, reportedly the skipper down half a bottle of whisky!
