Our next destination is Ushguli in Svaneti.

We drove from Ambrolauri into Upper Racha, following the river, through a steep-sided gorge with rocky outcrops and lush green forest.

We passed by the Sairme Pillars, through to Lentekhi with its impressive bas relief in the shape of a sword. In the tiny hamlet of Sasashi we spotted Stalin standing in a garden, we waved out to the man tending his crop in the next field. As the gorge opened up we started the climb up into the mountains of Svaneti. We passed fields of wildflowers, bubbling streams. The views across the mountains were awesome.

Arriving in Ushguli we stopped for lunch. Of course we had to sample kubdari, a spiced meat bread, the specialty from Svaneti. We then strolled though the cobbled streets checking out the Svan towers, the local architecture and of course the local dogs. The smiling white dog got our leftover lunch.

On the way out of Ushguli we stopped so that Sue could climb up one of the towers for a view down the valley. This involved climbing a series of rickety ladders.

We will write a full story about this journey for our newletter soon. See link in profile to sign up to receive this.

Another lunch in Racha. This time at Kesane - Forget Me Not, a family run restaurant in Khotevi village not far from Ambrolauri.

Here we dine outdoors on a covered terrace with two cows grazing nearby.

Highlights were lobio - beans cooked in a clay pot, nadughi with honey - a delicious cheese similar to cottage cheese and lobiani with Racha ham - interestingly the beans and ham were served on top of the bread.

They also do takeouts so we ordered a serving of chashusuli a beef and tomato dish and some of their freshly baked bread to take back to our guesthouse for a light dinner.

This went perfectly with a bottle of Aleksandrouli that we bought from the selection of local wine for sale in the shop. Here we met the charming Gvantsa Kruashvili one of the family working in the business.

On our first day in Racha, our top priority was to visit a Marani (wine cellar) to sample some Ruchuli wine. Our friend .drinks.wine suggested we visit Lomtadze Family Wines, so we arranged a wine tasting and light lunch.

Misha our host kindly drove us to Lomtadze Marani, in the small village of Khvanchkara - the name of the famous semi-sweet wine from the area. We were excited to try some varieties that were new to us.

On arrival we were greeted by Tariel Lomtadze, the winemaker, and given a tour of his cellar. We then settled in on a lovely terrace overlooking the garden to sample the wines. There were five wines in total. We started with a dry Tetra made in qvevri, it had lovely depth. Then a Kudurauli, a variety that was new to us, followed by a semi-sweet Tetra. The reds were an Aleksandrouli, which was delicious and finally Khvanchkara a semi-sweet red that has recently won gold at Mundus Vini, one of the most prestigious wine competitions in the world. Understandably, Tariel was very proud of this wine.

Our light lunch turned out to be a Georgian feast with local cheese, salad, beans, lobiani (pastry stuffed with beans), mchadi, Rachan ham, eggplant with walnuts, beetroot pkhali and shkhmeruli - chicken with a garlicy cream sauce, a specialty of Racha. Every thing was prepared by our host, using local ingredients. It was all delicious.

It was then back to Gentry House to hang out on our balconies and take in the clean mountain air and the peaceful surrounds.

Thank you Tariel for your hospitality, it was a treat to try your wines.

Our first stop on our Racha and Svaneti road trip is Tsesi a small village on the Rioni river. Here we stay at Gentry House, high in the hills overlooking the valley below. From our rooms we have sensational views across the mountains with ever changing light and morning fog. We wake to the sound of tinkling bells as the local cows make their way up the mountain to graze for the day.

Our host Misha has lovingly restored his grandparents 150 year old home which is full of family history, with a generous balcony, wine cellar, and qvevri installed by his grandfather. There is a small guesthouse with two rooms, built using reclaimed timber and traditional methods with no nails.

We dine outdoors on a beautiful covered terrace, there is a tone oven for making bread and a mtsvadi bbq. Each night Misha prepares a light dinner (read feast) featuring Rachian specialties Shkhmeruli and lobiani plus delicious bbq pork, potatoes, and Georgian salad. We enjoy his Tsolikouri a light, fresh white wine and there are plenty of toasts, Georgian style.

Thank you for your generous hospitality. We have loved the peaceful surrounds. Until next time. Didi madloba Misha.

Yesterday we said goodbye to our lovely guide Kate.

For the first 3 days of our Eating Georgia 🇬🇪 tour she guides us through Tbilisi Old Town, the Dezerter Bazaar and on our day trip to Sighnaghi.

She is so knowledgeable and generous with her stories and has a great sense of humour. Our guests just love her 🥰

Until September - take care

Here are some pics of our time with her.

Between Eating Georgia tours we escaped Tbilisi for an overnight trip to Bolnisi to attend a wine festival featuring Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) wine regions.

Bolnisi and nearby Asureti date back to the early 19th century when they were settled by Swabian Germans. Bolnisi was named Katherinenfeld, and Asureti was Elisabethal.

The architecture is a mix of German and Georgian and even today some older people speak a little German.

We had a wonderful time exploring both towns and tried some excellent wines from this micro-zone. Asureti Shala anyone?

It was lovely to hangout with she took the photos of the wine being poured and the festival 😊

The trip was not without incident! A full and fun account of this adventure will appear in our next newsletter.

Eating Tokyo - five fabulous food-filled days

For many, the idea of exploring Tokyo is daunting. The language and the complicated street address system make it seemingly impossible to unlock the city’s hidden gems.

Eating Tokyo has carefully curated an itinerary that is perfect for those interested in getting to the heart of the Tokyo food scene.

Let Janice and Sue take you on a culinary adventure in this vibrant city. From the back streets of Roppongi to Tsukiji market, the heart of Shinjuku to the alleyways of Asakusa, they will take you to some of their favourite finds.

Sample street food, explore the Tsukiji Market and peruse the aisles of a famous department store food hall. Eat traditional udon noodles and the freshest sushi and sashimi. Dine at a modern kaiseki restaurant, hard to find izakayas and a Michelin starred restaurant.
