"There's something about camping in the mountains that just makes me feel so alive. Anyone relate? 🏔

It was a tough hike to get here, my pack was super heavy with all the extra gear we needed for camping and the baby (hubby carried baby) but it was all worth it for evenings like this. Take me back 🥰

If you book water taxi (do this with ) you’ll get a return ride from deep water cove (near Milford Sound airport) to Sandfly Point (the end point for most multi-day hikers).

Just make sure you’re back in time to catch the last water taxi to Milford Sound!

"A quiet kind of wild: Fiordland in early winter

After a few restful days beside Lake Te Anau, I swapped icy dips for hiking boots and began a hīkoi into the mountains above the water.

The trail led through sheltered coves and lush forest carpeted with ferns before opening to the sky and snowy peaks. It was just me, two German lads (each armed with a kg of peanut butter), and an Australian-Canadian couple. Three of us didn’t check our cooking gas and ran out (oops). With blizzard conditions ahead, we considered turning back after our night in Luxmore Hut, but carried on. The piercing wind eased as snow flurried, and for a moment the clouds broke as we crossed the ridgeline to Iris Burn Hut ❄️

In just a few days, I was in awe of the trail’s diversity and accessibility. With fewer footprints and more space to breathe, shoulder season also calls for extra care. Always check the site for updates and warnings 🌿"

Our trips are inspired by our own experiences in Fiordland – you won’t find them anywhere else because they are, quite simply, the way we as locals like to see and do Fiordland.

Fiordland Outdoors Company is made up of husband and wife team Christine and Mark and our two sons, Zane and Morgan, and we really do live and breathe the Fiordland outdoor lifestyle. Funnily enough, it was while enjoying this lifestyle – taking mates out fishing – that the idea for the Fiordland Outdoors Company came about. Mark, who has skippered boats all over the world, was showing friends his favourite fishing spots on the Waiau, when the question came up: Had he considered becoming a professional fishing guide himself, and showing visitors what Fiordland was really all about? And the rest, as they say, is history.

Six years, three boats and a team of five later, the essence of the Fiordland Outdoors Company hasn’t changed – helping people ‘see and do our Fiordland’ forms the fabric of what we’re all about. Mark still tries to go fishing as much as possible, often taking our boys out as much as he can.

We love Spending family time, water skiing and beach time on the lake in the summer, trout fishing, hiking and biking the cycle trail. Boys Zane and Morgan love motor biking and completing motorbike trail rides with their Dad, but Mum can’t still can’t stand to watch them!

Favourite places The Upper Waiau River – we spend as much time as we can fishing, making a day of it on the riverbank swimming in the river and BBQ’ing on the beach. Camping in Mavora Lakes. This is a favourite of ours since we were kids, terrific camping location and the kids can be free to explore and learn.

Exploring nooks and crannies of Fiordland, including escaping to back country huts to disconnect for the night. Milford Sound – we love staying overnight when we can in winter when there are less people about, crab hunting on the foreshore at low tide. The stars at night in Milford, with little to no light pollution, are always something special to see.
