Great Walks opening dates are now out, including for non-Great Walks lodges, huts and campsites.

The Department of Conservation has announced the new opening dates for booking Great Walks and other facilities for the 2023/24 season (excluding Milford, which booked out on 20 April).

The Self-contained Motor Vehicles Legislation Act is now law, which means changes to freedom camping begin to take effect over a transition period.

From 7 June 2025, all vehicles will need to be certified with a green warrant to be certified self-contained under the new requirements.

Vehicles with a portable toilet are no longer able to be certified self-contained.

If your vehicle is already certified self-contained with a blue warrant you can still freedom camp even if your vehicle has a portable toilet, until your blue warrant expires, or 7 June 2025 (whichever happens sooner).
