Destination Highlight: Port Douglas, QLD 🇦🇺☀️

Looking for a warm-weather escape during the New Zealand winter? Port Douglas in Far North Queensland is a popular option because the dry season there means blue skies, low humidity and daytime temperatures around 25°C in our winter.

Set between the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, Port Douglas is known for its tropical vibe, palm-lined beaches, and relaxed pace. It’s the kind of place where you can spend your days snorkelling on the reef, wandering through the rainforest, or just enjoying a quiet coffee in town.

If you're someone who likes nature, sunshine and not having to wear a puffer jacket in July — this one might be worth keeping on your radar. 🌴

Dry season at its best. Expect warm sunny days, Mindil Beach markets at sunset, crocodile cruises, and waterfalls in Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks. It’s a great time to explore the rich Aboriginal heritage and wild landscapes of the Northern Territory.

🐠 AUGUST – CAIRNS & THE GREAT BARRIER REEF (QLD)
August is prime time to visit the reef and Port Douglas — take the time to unwind and relax or snorkel or dive among coral gardens or explore the Daintree Rainforest. The weather is mild and dry, and you might even spot a humpback whale or two.

🌊 SEPTEMBER – GOLD COAST & BYRON BAY (QLD/NSW)
Spring is in the air and so are migrating whales! The Gold Coast offers sunny beaches and theme parks, while Byron Bay brings a slower pace with surf culture, hinterland walks, and boutique shopping. Great time for a road trip with a few scenic stops.

Snorkelling in Niue – Like Swimming in Glass🤿

One thing you should absolutely not miss in Niue? Getting into the water.
With visibility that feels limitless and a water temperature sitting at a comfortable 27°C, it’s no surprise Niue is known for some of the best snorkelling in the South Pacific.

Linda joined Niue Blue, located right next to their accommodation. They’re a fantastic local operator—friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about the sea life they help you discover. Over three different snorkelling spots, she was treated to an explosion of colour: coral gardens, tropical fish, clear-as-glass water and… sea kraits! Endemic to Niue these semi-aquatic creatures are highly venomous but harmless to snorkellers. Interestingly they need air to breathe and breed on land.

And then the moment that took things to the next level—a pod of around 15 spinner dolphins swam straight up to their group! Including a mother and calf! The guide said it was rare, even for Niue. They were curious, playful, and stayed with them long enough for each person in the group to get a close-up look.

The skipper even rigged two tow lines from the boat so the visitors could float quietly and watch them ride the bow waves beneath them.

A snorkelling trip turned into an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime swim with dolphins which Linda will never forget it.

Discover Niue – The Rock of Polynesia☀️

Linda & Larry recently visited Niue and here is their honest take on this destination!
Tucked away in the South Pacific, Niue might not be the first island that comes to mind—but it’s one that leaves a lasting impression.

Locals call it “The Rock” and that’s exactly what it is—a raised coral atoll, not a sandy beach paradise. But what it lacks in sand, it more than makes up for in charm, crystal-clear water, magical rock pools and a truly peaceful atmosphere.

“We arrived at Niue airport to a warm breeze, waving palms, and friendly faces—things looked a bit chaotic at first but it all worked easily with rental vehicles waiting and helpful airport staff!
We stayed at the Scenic Matavai Resort. The rooms were clean and spacious, with stunning clifftop views across the crystal clear ocean. The pool made the perfect meeting place for our group and the restaurant’s panoramic outlook was breathtaking, especially the vibrant sunsets.”

Dining around the island is half the fun—many spots are hidden down side roads or tucked behind lush gardens. Don’t be surprised if your dinner plans feel like part of the adventure.

Getting around is easy (and essential!) with a hire car. The ring road is about 60km and takes you past lush forest, ocean access points, and tiny villages with a laid-back charm. You won’t find traditional beaches here—but there are spectacular rock pools and swimming spots if you know where to look. Low tide is best, and the local map points them all out.

If you're after somewhere different, low-key, and full of natural beauty, Niue might just be your kind of place.

Mysterious creatures that may have inspired tales of unicorns – the narwhal. 🐋🦄

Narwhals are fascinating not just because of their long spiral tusk, but also because we still don’t fully understand what that tusk is actually for.

To start with, it’s not a horn – it’s a tooth. Usually, only males grow the tusk, although some females also develop one, and a small number of males never do. All narwhals actually have two teeth, but typically, only one grows into the long, twisted tusk. In rare cases, both teeth can grow – creating a double-tusked narwhal.

They’re also incredible divers. Males have been recorded diving as deep as 1,800 metres, and they can stay underwater for long periods. Much of their life happens below the surface, which makes studying them especially challenging. Even their mating behaviours remain largely a mystery, hidden in the deep Arctic waters.

In the past, narwhals were hunted for their tusks, which were believed to have magical or medicinal powers. In the 1500s, Queen Elizabeth I reportedly paid up to £10,000 for a single tusk – the equivalent of millions today. These tusks were often passed off as unicorn horns and prized in royal collections.

Narwhals live in pods that can number in the hundreds, but they surface only when they must — because polar bears may be waiting. While polar bears are often scavengers, narwhals are one of the few animals they actively hunt, we can only wonder why.

Still largely mysterious, still rarely seen — it’s no wonder narwhals continue to capture the imagination and attract keen travellers.
