Just over a month in…

Our first month on the water as Reel South Charters is in the books, and what a start it’s been.

We’ve watched guests step onto Mou Waho for the first time and find the lake within an island at the top. We’ve explored the quiet shores of Stevensons Island, wandered over to the old cabaret dance floor on Ruby Island, and put lines in the water chasing brown and rainbow trout. Plenty of days the lake just showed off.

None of this happens without our guests. Thank you to every one of you who took a chance on a brand new operator, shared a day on the lake with us, and left such kind reviews. You’ve made this first month one to remember.

This is only the beginning. Summer’s on its way and there are plenty more good days on the water ahead.

Sorry, That Wānaka Tree. You’ve been replaced.

Found this one on a walk along the lake’s edge today. No crowd of tripods, no 6am alarm, no fighting for the spot. Just a quiet stroll and a tree that clearly didn’t get the memo about staying on dry land.

Took a few hours away from the office today to get out on the water with my favourite fishing buddy. I had some new reels to put through their paces, and Nala made it very clear she was coming along to make sure everything was up to standard. Judging by the tail wags, I’d say they passed inspection.

Old man winter swung back through for one last hello, so it was a cold one out there, but the fresh snow made for a pretty special backdrop.

Best part of the day? Nala’s having trout for dinner tonight. She’s happy, which makes me happy.

A huge thank you to the legends at Marine and Sport Wanaka.

After this morning’s charter, the boat developed a power steering issue. One phone call and they were straight on the job. It eventually had to come out of the water, and the crew stayed late to sort it out so we’re back in action for tomorrow’s charters.

The wind had plenty to say this morning, but the views said more.

This morning’s island tour took a lucky two across a lively Lake Wānaka to Mou Waho. The walk up to Arethusa Pool, a lake on an island in a lake, paid off with views straight down the lake to the peaks. A predator-free island, a bit of chop on the crossing, and two guests who agreed it was worth every gust.

Not every day out here is glassy, and some of the best ones aren’t.
