The Zigzag Scars of a Survivor – Observed Underwater in Moorea

Suspended in the deep blue of Moorea, fins still and breath slowed, we waited. And then, they appeared.

Three humpback whales, gliding peacefully through the silent ocean. Among them, one drew our attention: on the right side of her body, long white zigzag scars — clear and deep, the visible signs of a past encounter with a boat propeller.

The wounds had healed, but the marks remained, a story etched into her skin. And yet, she swam with strength and grace, accompanied by two other whales, moving together in a slow, majestic dance.

That underwater moment was powerful. In the presence of these gentle giants, we were silent witnesses — moved by their calm, and deeply affected by the history written on one of their bodies.

These scars are a reminder that the ocean is alive, fragile, and that the way we travel through it must change.
In Moorea, every encounter with a whale is a privilege — and a responsibility.
