The Kwame van is a vital link between Gurney airport, Alotau and Kwame. The van is currently serviced by Peter (pictured on right and with our overall property maintenance and admin person Alabi). Peter also maintains the solar electrical systems, water pumps and general plumbing.

Peter learned his mechanical skills at Ahioma. My Uncle George served at Ahioma during World War 2. Uncle George was also a motor mechanic.

The Motor Mechanic business at Ahioma (near Alotau) is known as ARB.

The People Moving Vehicles (PMV's) which includes trucks and small buses run each day except Sunday between East Cape and Alotau along the East Cape to Alotau sealed highway. They pass Kwame which is about 12 kilometres west of East Cape and 48 Kilometres east of Alotau. The fare between Kwame and Alotau is 14 Kina per passenger plus a fee for cargo.

Pictured is the popular East Cape market and a PMV named "Thanks Mum." I think nearly all the PMV's are named and space is always at a premium. As seen here a very large bunch of bananas is loaded between the bull bar and front of cabin.

The PMV operators provide a valuable service to the people of Milne Bay bringing fresh food from the mainland and islands to the markets in Alotau.

These fish were caught just days ago not far from Kwame shores, from a traditional outrigger canoe by a happy guest of team Kwame.

Mummy T reported this to me and I could feel the excitement in her voice as she related the news of this catch.

I am not a fisherman so will leave it to the fisherman to describe these catches.

Nancy captured this short video of her niece Stena, and Stena's daughter Grace, arriving at Kwame shores in their outrigger canoe.

Outrigger canoes can carry two people and are used for fishing and general transport.

Stena and Grace were travelling from their home, about two kilometres to the east of Kwame.

This photo was taken by Nancy about 6 weeks ago on the verandah of Kwame Guest House where Nancy's and I stayed.

Nase and his wife Sandra are the nearby caretakers of the Guest House.

After sundown a strong northerly wind started blowing and it was gusting at times. A baby Kingfisher bird was dislodged from its perch in the nearby trees, flew down, and perched on Sandra's hand.

The bird life at Kwame is very diverse. Occasionally there can be seen doves, hormbill's, and many other species.

Nancy's nieces, Wilma and Sandra with their great catch from a night out fishing in and beyond Kwame shores.

That's one of the Kwame dogs called "Surveyor" looking on.

Kwame dogs often just turn up and stay and they can be named as a result of where they turned up or current events at the time they turn up.

At the time Surveyor turned up the current event at that time was disputes over land boundaries.

While Surveyor might be looking chuffed at Wilma and Sandra's fine effort and catch he could also be surveying the boundary between making a play for one or more fresh fish and the consequences if caught.

In Australia before you go out fishing one would usually go to a bait shop to buy bait to put on your hook.

There are no bait shops near Kwame Papua New Guinea or in fact anywhere in Milne Bay PNG at least not that I know of.

If you come to Kwame you can learn how to acquire bait the local way by chasing Gumaguma around sunset or just after. Children are particularly good at this as they have nimble eyes and hands and feet for spotting and catching the Gumaguma. Gumaguma are a hermit crab that can hide by retreating quickly into their shell.

Having acquired your Gumaguma then you have something to put on your hook for fishing on Kwame reef. Fishing can be by day or night by torchlight and there are any number of friendly people at Kwame who can take you out to catch a fish.

Ganu has begun clearing a site for a home for his family and for a second bungalow at Iyani Boa. Both will be constructed mainly from bush materials. The bungalow will be another option for the budget conscious traveller. This bungalow will have the advantage of being closer to Tawali dive facility which has some of the best diving in PNG. Iyani Boa is a beautiful secluded place that will offer guests access to swimming, snorkelling, fishing and canoeing.

Guests will be looked after by Ganu and his family with healthy, affordable cooked meals a feature too.

Ganu can be seen here climbing a bread fruit tree.

Kwame always has new life. Kittens, pups, chicks and piglets. These 5 like to be out on the lawn with noses down in the grass looking for something to eat. Meanwhile Splodge the guard dog at the lodge and top dog at Kwame is smart and knows very well not to make a play for any of these piglets. He knows the risks are too big. He is a smart dog is Splodge the guard dog at the lodge.
