🌴 Queen Emma Heritage Site – Where Niugini’s Story of Development Began 🌴

Before modern trade reached Papua New Guinea, the Duke of York Islands served as the gateway that connected Niugini to the world.

In the 1870s, Eliza Coe – Queen Emma, the Queen of the South Seas – established a thriving trading centre here that transformed Duke of York, New Britain, and eventually Papua New Guinea.

From this very island, copra trading and coconut plantations were born, growing to become one of PNG’s most powerful and reliable cash crops, supporting livelihoods and economic growth for generations.

🏛️ A Foundation of National Development This historic site marks the beginning of: • Queen Emma’s Old House
• The region’s first swimming pool
• A historic trade warehouse
• Her first settlement before relocating to Ralum, Kokopo

🗣️ Birthplace of Tok Pisin Here, labourers from different islands created a new way to communicate — a language that became Tok Pisin, today spoken proudly across Papua New Guinea and uniting the nation.

🌍 Why International Visitors Love This Site This is not just a heritage attraction — it is the birthplace of: • Trade
• Language
• Cultural exchange
• Nation-building

✨ Walk where PNG’s trade began
✨ Stand where Tok Pisin took its first words
✨ Experience living history
