Watching nature’s eye..
While with more focus and stress up on covid 19 pandemic there is another phenomenal crisis is approaching us & when it comes it will come badly up on us. It will lay off all our livelihood activities, our food security will be destroy, about 90% of people living outside of formal economy will suffer greatly. It will pose threat to the developments and infrastructures of this great nation. We are the most venerable nation in the Pacific to face this crisis known as Climate Emergency (previously climate change). Having said that climate change it’s a natural disaster caused by human activities, as human being we must always consider our action & choices very wisely.
Climate change and climate variability are key factors that affect the environment and socio-economic conditions livelihood and human wellbeing; Right now the government should focus on helping our local farmers to build strong community climate resilience agricultural infrastructures throughout the country. Agriculture is the main source of livelihoods in PNG about 80% of people heavily dependent on natural resources and rural livelihoods are based largely on subsistence and semi subsistence agriculture.
Therefor our food security and livestock’s are at risk, our water system will be affected we will lose our biodiversity and natural environment in the face of this natural catastrophic event which is about to be unfold. Almost about 70% of our rural people have no access to decent housing, sanitation and sustainable economy to withstand such crisis.
Climate change is predicted to exacerbate hazards like coastal flooding, inland flooding and droughts. Moreover it is noted that natural disasters driven by climatic conditions and gradual shifts in climatic conditions disrupt daily life, cause damage to assets and infrastructure, destroy livelihoods, endanger cultural and ecological treasures, and kill or injure people unpredictably like the recent floods & landslides up in the highlands. Sea level is rising, it has been reported that several Islands in PNG have requested for relocation and build seawall along the cost.
We need to stop destroying our environment and focus on how to enable sustainable production landscape in PNG.
Oh yeah sometimes people say silly things, Well am not a scientist, but this is what I was advocating for last 5 years…
