On This Day, 500 years ago, the first Christian baptism in the Philippines took place in Cebu. The ceremony was officiated by Fr. Pedro de Valderrama, chaplain of the Magellan-Elcano expedition.

Humabon was baptized as Carlos, after the incumbent king of Spain, and 500 men were baptized before noon.

On that day, Magellan requested to place a large cross in the middle of the piaza for veneration.

After lunch, the baptism was held for women, including the wife of Rajah Humabon, and 800 more.

Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan gave Juana an image of the Sto. Niño. Accounts said this drove Juana to contrition and baptism while in tears.

The 500-year-old image of the Sto. Niño remained intact to date and has been venerated inside the basilica in downtown Cebu City.
