Igbaras is a second-class municipality situated in the southwestern part of Iloilo Province, Philippines. Based on the 2024 Municipal Profile, it has a population of 34,001, consisting of 17,375 males and 16,626 females, and occupies a total land area of 15,245 hectares. The town is located about 40 kilometers southwest of Iloilo City and is politically subdivided into 46 barangays, each contributing significantly to its socio-economic growth.
Administratively, Igbaras belongs to the First Congressional District of Iloilo, aligning it with broader legislative governance and provincial development programs. Farming and river-based activities remain the primary sources of livelihood for its people. The native tongue of the Igbarasnons is Kinaray-a, though most residents are also fluent in Hiligaynon, Filipino, and English.
Igbaras takes pride in its vibrant culture and traditions, celebrated through two major fiestas: the annual town fiesta every May 22 in honor of Sta. Rita de Cascia, which blends religious devotion with cultural festivities, and the religious fiesta on June 24 in honor of St. John the Baptist. Beyond these celebrations, the municipality is widely recognized as the Ecotourism Destination of Southern Iloilo, boasting natural wonders such as Mount Napulak, Nadsadjan Falls, and an abundance of rivers, mountains, and caves perfect for nature lovers, hikers, and explorers.
Central to its cultural identity is the Tangyan Festival, the official town festival, which serves as a dynamic showcase of Igbarasβ rich natural and cultural heritage. Through activities that strengthen the communityβs bond with nature, the festival embodies the townβs spirit of unity and pride. At its core lies the Tangyan River; the lifeblood of Igbaras and a vital source of irrigation for its fertile farmlands. For generations, this river has stood as the municipalityβs economic heartland, sustaining the lives of Igbarasnons and symbolizing abundance, resilience, and sustenance.
