“Contour Line Theory for Civil Engineering Student”

Contour lines are imaginary lines drawn on maps that connect points of equal elevation (height) above a reference level (usually mean sea level).

🔹 Key Points

Same Elevation: Every point on a contour line has the same RL (Reduced Level).
Contour Interval: The vertical distance between two consecutive contour lines (e.g., 20 m, 40 m, 60 m).
Never Cross: Contour lines do not intersect each other.
Closed Loops: They always form closed shapes (indicating hills or depressions).
Spacing Indicates Slope:
Close lines → Steep slope
Wide spacing → Gentle slope

🔹 Important Features

Hill: Concentric contours with increasing values inward
Valley: Contours form a “V” shape pointing uphill
Ridge: “V” shape pointing downhill
Depression: Closed contours with lower values inside
