Workshop at a local high school
During my first visit, I had the opportunity to sit in on a lecture
given by the local high school students, and I promised them, ‘I’ll
come and visit you all next time, along with my friends.
So, when the workshop finally took place, we discussed how we, as
designers, should approach it, and decided to have everyone create
their own zine (a self-published booklet created and distributed
freely). The theme was to express Lumban’s ‘Past, Present and Future’
on separate double-page spreads. They divided into groups, with each
group assigning roles for illustration, storytelling and ideas, and
worked together on the project.

など検討し、ZINE(自由に制作・発行する自主制作冊子)をみんなに作ってもらうことにした。

We asked every member of each group to give a presentation, and what
they all had in common was that the “Embroidery Town of Lumban”
featured somewhere in their past, present or future. It seems that
someone in every family is involved in the embroidery industry. When I
asked them about it, it turned out that none of the students had ever
actually tried embroidery. Their parents encourage them to study and
pursue different career paths, so it seems there are actually very few
opportunities for them to take up embroidery.
Adults say, ‘Young people aren’t interested in traditional
industries’, whilst young people say, ‘We don’t have the chance to
experience traditional industries’. Surely this role of bridging the
gap is precisely the kind of interference we can offer.

DOOR to ASIA Lumban
"Lumban is more than Embroidery Capital of the Philippines".

Lumban is more than the Embroidery Capital of the Philippines.
The women leaders at the heart of Lumban's embroidery industry gathered together to share insights about the craft and its culture. Embroidery is their very way of life and source of pride, forming a vital community that feels like an extension of family when they come together to create. They showed us pieces filled with special embroidery techniques – they were truly breathtaking.

Later, they let us try embroidery ourselves. We could truly appreciate the patterns created stitch by stitch and the immense time and effort involved. When I went to ask the teacher for a little guidance, she ended up doing about half of it for me! A collaboration, shall I say.
Machine embroidery is actually quite advanced now. However, there are natural expressions that only handwork can achieve. They seem to be incorporating both handwork and machine work, dividing the labour and sharing the value.

DOOR to ASIA Lumban
LUMBAN

Another town we stayed in was Lumban, in Laguna Province.
A characteristic feature of Philippine towns is that the church forms the centre, with the town hall and main street in front, so the church is usually the first place we visit. Lumban's church (San Sebastian Parish Church) was first built in 1578. After being rebuilt several times following fires and floods, it became the first stone church in the Philippines outside Manila in 1600.

The pride of the town of Lumban is its embroidery.
The origins of the ‘Embroidery Capital of the Philippines’ trace back to the 16th century, when Franciscan nuns introduced the craft to local women. Meanwhile, most men were engaged in constructing the church. Previously, both men and women practised embroidery as part of their daily lives. Characterised by the intricate and durable Kalado embroidery technique, it produces the traditional Barong (men's attire) and Filipiniana (women's dress), staples for Philippine weddings and formal occasions.
A festival honouring the ‘Embroidery Capital of the Philippines’ is held annually in September, which I hope to attend next time. Burdang Lumban Festival.

Hiding in Your Shell.

Almost half of adults feel lonely. But loneliness is a part of life, according to philosopher Anja Machielse: that's what the government must promote. Psychologist Jean-Pierrevan de Ven argues that every person must solve their own loneliness.

Paete has another craft: TAKA, papier-mâché (Hariko,
There are many pieces, such as water buffalo, horses, lions and more.
It apparently began when papier-mâché statues were made to replace heavy wooden sacred images for decoration or festivals. Women are primarily involved in the making. True to its reputation as the “woodcarving town”, someone in the family usually does woodcarving, so they make the wooden mould (now plaster moulds), and then layers of paper are applied to create the pieces. While it is an important source of livelihood, it is also made within a community where women gather and support one another. One mother working there makes coconut wine, called SASA, and when we visited, she kindly offered us a delicious meal.
Incidentally, that coconut wine is said not to cause a hangover, and indeed it didn't.
When I took some papier-mâché back to Japan as a souvenir, it was used as the cover image for The Toyota foundation's booklet.

Paete

Edgardo Bragais / Blacksmith
Paete is renowned as a woodcarving town, yet now there's only one blacksmith left in the town who makes and repairs woodcarving tools.
Since I couldn't go his studio with everyone earlier, I decided to go alone on the final day. With only the information that it was ‘little up the mountain from the town’, I went for the 7am meeting. I ended up climbing quite high up and felt a bit uncertain, but after contacting him, I managed to reach the workshop safely. He showed me the entire production process from start to finish, and what's more, he gave me one of the woodcarving tools he'd made. It must have been his way of saying a message to me.
I'll be back again, bringing more friends with me. Because you are a very important person to the woodcarving town of Paete.

Edgardo Bragais /

The woodcarver/artist, Pio Fadul.
His family are woodcarvers going back generations; all his brothers (four of whom I met this time) are woodcarvers, and his children and grandchildren also work as craftsmen. Pio is truly an artist too. When he went into the forest alone, he encountered Jesus and the Virgin Mary, and since then he has devoted himself entirely to carving the Jesus and Virgin Mary he saw at that time. Fortunately, I was able to witness his work every morning. On the final day of my visits, he greeted me with a brilliant smile.
That was so special to me.
